Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure surfaces to be treated are free from any dust, dirt, wax, grease, oil or other surface contaminants that could affect the adhesion of the varnish.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Lightly sand the surface, then remove any sanding dust and wipe with a lint-free cloth dampened with white spirit and allow to dry
  2. Make good any holes or defects in the timber with Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler or Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Filler
  3. Remove any mould with a dedicated mould and mildew cleaner
  4. Open doors and windows to allow for good ventilation while varnishing

Previously Varnished Timber

Remove any loose, flaking or peeling coatings with a scraper or a dedicated varnish remover, then treat as New Timber.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess colour and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before and during use to insure a consistent finish.

  1. Apply the varnish evenly, using a good quality synthetic brush, in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Apply 2-3 coats, leaving 1 hour between coats
  3. Before applying the final coat, give the wood a quick sanding and wipe down with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirit to help the varnish stick and give a smooth finish

Please Note: If you get any water on the varnish within the first couple of days, wipe it off gently with a clean, dry lint-free cloth. Do not rub it.

Cleaning Equipment

After use, brushes can be cleaned with warm, soapy water.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Regular Cleaning

Varnished surfaces can be cleaned by wiping with a dry (or slightly dampened) lint-free cloth.

Deep Cleaning

For stubborn marks, a dedicated wood cleaner can be used. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container.

Maintenance

If the finish begins to look worn over time, simply apply a fresh coat of Ronseal Diamond Hard Coloured Interior Varnish, following the Application instructions above.

Repair

To spot repair any scuffs or marks to the finish, simply clean the affected area and apply a fresh layer of varnish to the damaged area(s).

Clear instructions Easy to apply
Used to revarnish a Dresser that had survived three children, five grandchildren and numerous dogs. I am a 'have a goer', not a dedicated 'DIYer' . The job took one day, and even my wife thought it was an excellent finish, so it must have been.

I found it easy to use, quick drying and easy to clean brushes afterwards
I have a G Plan bedroom suite which must be getting on for thirty years old now. The only part of it that shows it’s age is the dressing table surface. I have renovated this twice now with this product and have been very pleased with the results each time.

Wish I had discovered this before!
Used to use Ronseal polyurethane varnish over dried, diluted white emulsion to give limed effect to softwood but this does both jobs all in one go and has the added bonus of being quick drying and low odour. Sand with very fine sand paper in between coats and build up the colour. Nice hard satin finish. Did a brilliant job and would definitely use again.
