Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, grease, wax, polish and any other surface contaminants.

Bare or New Wood
  1. Fill any gaps or minor imperfections in the wood using a suitable wood filler
  2. Lightly sand bare or new wood to provide a key
  3. Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  4. Degrease wooden surfaces with Methylated Spirit and a lint-free cloth if required
Previously Painted Surfaces
  1. Sand newly painted wood first to provide a key
  2. Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  3. Older painted wood, where the paint itself may fail, should be stripped using a hot air gun or a suitable paint stripper, then sanded and cleaned prior to coating with varnish

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Use only in well ventilated areas.

  1. Stir the varnish thoroughly before and periodically during use
  2. Apply 2-3 full coats along the wood grain using a good quality synthetic brush, microfibre roller or spray system
  3. If using a conventional spray system, following the manufacturers advice. Dilute with up to a maximum of 10% white spirit
  4. Seal new or bare surfaces with a thinned first coat of Polyvine Extra Pale Varnish (with up to 10% white spirit) using a brush or a cloth pad for hardwoods to help the varnish penetrate the surface
  5. If a dead flat finish with a higher level of durability and stain resistance is required, apply 1-2 coats of eggshell clear satin followed by 1-2 coats of dead flat clear
  6. Lightly denib the surface between applications
  7. Remove all traces of de-nibbing / sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner
  8. Allow 6-8 hours between coats and 2 hours after the final coat before use
Cleaning Equipment

Application brushes and equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with white spirit and wiped dry.

Easy to apply and true dead Matt finish
I wasn’t sure what product to apply to my new kitchen worktops and someone was on hand with a quick call to run me through popular options. This one stood out to me due to its extra pale properties. I applied 2 layers of satin and 1 layer of dead flat Matt as per instructions and there is no shine at all. So far so good. Water beads in surface and no stains of white ring marks from glasses left on the top. The finish does darken slightly after 3 layers which was expected but not as much as previous varnishes I have used. Happy with the end result. No yellow tones to the wood for sure
