Overview

Overview

Back

Polyvine Exterior Wood Varnish is a waterproof, microporous, UV resistant, clear protection for exterior wooden doors, windows, garden furniture and other exterior wood work. The unique polymer system gives a silky satin finish and highlights the natural grain of the wood. It is suitable for exterior softwood and hardwood timber applications, giving a high level of UV resistance, waterproofing and preservation.

Please note: this product is not suitable for exterior Oak. Exterior Oak has a tendency to split and crack as a result of weathering and temperature changes. It is therefore not suitable for varnishing.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surface to be treated must be clean and dry, with dust, dirt, wax and grease removed.

New, Bare Wood

  1. The timber should be allowed to acclimatise to its end-use environment and it's moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating
  2. Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits. Certain timber species contain high levels of natural wood extractives or resins. Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper. Any remaining residues should be removed using a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits. Allow solvent to evaporate fully before over coating
  3. The use of knotting agents are not recommended as they are not always fully effective which can highlight the presence of knots or adhesion of coatings can be impaired
  4. Fill any gaps where necessary with a suitable wood filler

Old, Untreated Wood

  1. All contaminants must be removed from the surface by sanding, 80-120 Grit for vertical, 60-80 Grit for horizontal surfaces
  2. Fungus, pollen or spores should be removed as this will discolour the surface of the timber when exposed to moisture
  3. If contamination is suspected, treat timber with a suitable preservative treatment
  4. Fill any gaps where necessary with a suitable wood filler

Previously Coated Wood

  1. Completely remove old treatments with 60-80 grit sandpaper
  2. Ensure surface is dry clean and free from dust, then refer to as Old, Untreated Wood, as above

Application

Application

Back
  1. Best application temperature is between 10°C and 30°C
  2. Do not apply in direct sunlight or when rain is imminent.
  3. Apply Polyvine Exterior Wood Varnish liberally with a good quality synthetic brush, going in the direction of the grain
  4. Maintain a wet coat, saturating all end grain
  5. Allow 4 hrs between coats
  6. Apply 3-4 coats in total
  7. To achieve a fully protected Dead Flat finish, apply 2-3 coats of Satin before a final coat of Dead Flat

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Inspect surfaces treated with Polyvine Exterior Wood Varnish yearly for signs of wear or damage. Clean surface thoroughly with a dedicated garden cleaning solution. A maintenance coat should be applied every 1-3 years on exposed areas, 3-4 years on less exposed or sheltered areas or as required.
