Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure surfaces to be treated with Osmo Woodstain are clean, dry and frost-free prior to application (moisture content max. 20°C).

  • Existing oil finishes should be lightly sanded and cleaned before application
  • Existing coatings such as paint and varnish must be fully removed by sanding or stripping back to bare wood
  • Remove sanding dust thoroughly from the surface with a brush or vacuum cleaner before application
  • Use white spirit to degrease and remove surface contaminates if required
  • Any traces of green growth or mould should be treated and removed with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner
  • Fill any holes or gaps with a suitable wood filler
  • Revive any greyed or sun damaged wood with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel
  • Any end grain can be sealed with Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax
  • If additional protection against blue stain, rot and insects is desired, pre-treat the wood, if possible on all sides, with Osmo WR Base Coat

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application.

  1. Apply Osmo wood stain thinly and evenly along the wood grain with an Osmo Soft Tip Brush or Osmo Premium Microfibre Roller and spread well
  2. Work the oil into the surface grain of the wood
  3. If possible, apply the first coat to all sides of the wood before installation to offer the best all-round protection
  4. Wipe off any excess oil from the surface of the wood with a clean, lint-free cloth
  5. Allow the first coat to dry for 4-6 hours
  6. Apply a second coat using the same method as the first

Please Note: Rough sawn timber is more absorbent, meaning coverage per litre will be greatly reduced.

Maintenance

If surfaces show signs of wear or a loss of weather resistance over time, simply clean and add a maintenance coat of Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain to the existing finish.

Does the Natural Oil Stain contain UV filters?

The coloured options of the Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain do offer UV protection as the pigments act as a barrier, preventing the greying effects of the sun. As the 701 Clear Matt doesn't contain pigments, it offers no UV protection.

Great Product
This stain is great. Used on old pine panelling and it came out really well. Was not sure I would have enough but used sparingly gave the best results and I ended up only using half the tin.

Great product
Easy to order and use. Great finish. Coverage significantly less than on tin or web site, but still worth it

Easy to use, amazing results
I used this a couple of years ago on a new shed with great results. I’ve just used it again on decking and I highly recommend it. I’m not a professional, I’m an elderly woman, and I found it very easy to apply with a brush. The decking obviously used a lot more because of the grooves but I’m confident I won’t have to do it again for a while. It is so much better for the decking than the Ronseal product I used previously, which promised miracles but peeled off in a short time despite careful application, and meant I had to thoroughly pressure wash before applying the Osmo. The walnut shade is a lovely warm mid-brown. The finish is a natural matt, not like a paint finish. It does need stirring frequently while using as the pigment sinks to the bottom.
