Osmo Country Shades is a natural oil finish for exterior wood that offers UV stability to prevent blistering, flaking, peeling and cracking. Providing a microporous covering that allows the wood to breathe, expand and contract helps to protect the wood from the elements and, once dry, it is safe for people, animals and plants.

RAL colour matching: Please supply the specific shade reference number using this RAL chart in "Special Instructions" at checkout. Osmo RAL matched colours are made to order and are non-refundable. Osmo have advised that they are not able to colour mix the following RAL colours.

RAL 1026, RAL 1035, RAL 1036, RAL 2005, RAL 2007, RAL 2013, RAL 3024, RAL 3026, RAL 3032, RAL 3033, RAL 4011, RAL 4012, RAL 5025, RAL 5026, RAL 6035, RAL 6036, RAL 6038, RAL 7048, RAL 8029, RAL 9006, RAL 9007, RAL 9022, RAL 9023.

Please Note: Using this product on rough sawn or featherboard wood will significantly reduce it's coverage. It is also not recommended for use on Green Oak and Idigbo.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

To achieve optimum results, the surface of the wood will need to be free of dirt and dust, free of surface contaminants and any previous applications of oils and paints fully removed.

  • Clear all previous coats of paint or oil, with either sanding, the use of a paint scraper or paint stripper, ensuring the surface is stripped back to the bare wood
  • Further care should be taken if the surface preparation involves the removal of pre-1960s paint surfaces as they potentially can contain harmful levels of lead
  • If any organic growth is visible such as lichen, algal or fungal growths, then a suitable antifungal solution should be applied
  • Wash the surface to remove any dirt, grease or oil with a suitable detergent, rinse clean and the allow to thoroughly dry
  • Any surface deficiency will need to be repaired with a suitable wood filler, such as Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler
  • Pre-treat the surface with Osmo WR Base Coat (4001) if extra protection is required against blue staining, rot and insects

Please Note: If recoating over a previous application of Osmo Country Shades then it is not necessary to strip the previous coat and it is possible to apply on top of the original coating after following the cleaning steps. Wood treated with a varnish, lacquer or other surface coating must completely sanded before use.

Application

Application

Back

Always produce a test area beforehand to assess product suitability and the final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

To achieve the best results, Osmo Country Shades will need to be applied when the air and substrate temperature is between 10°C to 35°C

Apply to all sides before the installation of the wood to ensure maximum protection

  • Stir Osmo Country Shades thoroughly, taking care to work the sides and base of the tin, to ensure a consistent mixture of oil and pigment
  • Apply thinly and evenly with either a Osmo Soft Tip Brush, or the Osmo Small Microfiber Rollers following the direction of the wood grain
  • The standard finishing procedure is to apply 2 or more full coats of Osmo Country Shades to achieve the desired result, though if renovating a previous coat then it's possible only 1 coat will be required

Fabulous colour
Thick paint with good coverage. Wood-finishes-direct advisor suggested the colour on discussion and it is fabulous.

Good quality product with a nice finish
A good quality product with good coverage, a nice finish and great colour choices. Not inexpensive though. Was a little surprised to see a small amount of “lifting” in a couple of areas as I thought I had prepared the wood carefully and well, but overall, very pleased.

Good quality product
Great paints, on the expensive side but having read reviews seems that they will pass the test of time so fingers crossed.

Rather disappointed with the colour
Time will tell if the product is up to the usual standard of Osmo products. I have to say that I was disappointed with the colour. I ordered Terra Firmer which I assumed would be brown but turned out to be more of a salmon colour.

Aurora - lovely colour
Lovely Aurora colour (greeny-blue). To put two coats on a brand new shed - 6 feet by 10 feet - needed to buy three 250 ml tins of paint and have used two and a half tins. Love the finished effect.

This product is good, like really good!
I undertook the task of painting a newly built log cabin using Osmo's Country Shades 125ml (Dusty Dream), a tester to the larger quantities required for the job. Initially, I was apprehensive about choosing Osmo over other brands due to its price tag. Despite hearing positive feedback from professionals in the trade, the thought of needing many more litres to paint a 5mx3m building made me hesitant. However, this small 125ml sample defied expectations. As someone who has done a lot of DIY painting and decorating, I've never encountered a paint as effortlessly smooth as this. Its application resulted in minimal brush strokes, astonishing coverage, and a stunning absorption into the wood. While a second coat was necessary for lighter patches, a swift brush pass during the second application gave a solid finish. The drying time of 24+ hours was as expected (it was a damper October evening), but the resulting satin finish in a gorgeous deep grey proved its worth by repelling rainwater admirably soon after. While it's too early to speak on long-term durability (just a month in), and the price may induce a bit of shock, I'm confident in the exceptional protection this paint provides. It assures me of safeguarding the wood for a considerable stretch of time.

Lovely product that covers well
Initially I was shocked by the price of this 2.5 litre tin but I have changed my mind after using it. It spreads really well and goes a long way. I have a 5 metre by 3 metre log cabin and have done it all with one coat with enough left give a second coat to the essential areas. The colour was as I expected too.

Colour “grounded” does not match Osmo colour chart
I usually purchase Osmo Country Colours. I thought I would give this a try. The paint on arrival did not match the colour chart. Infact it was very light cream. I contacted Wood Finishes Direct who despite mixing a further pot agreed it was very light and did not match the colour chart. My other problem is there are no little samples. Osmo wanted you to pay £12 for a 125ml pot just to try a colour. Very expensive. It’s also much more watery compared to Country Colours. Not Wood Finishes Direct fault and Georgie from Customer Services went above and beyond to try and resolve the problem. They are an excellent company. However I think I’ll stick with Country Colours.
