Morrells 280 Pre-catalyst Lacquer is a high-build, pre-catalysed lacquer designed for spray application. Can be used over Morrells 280 High Solids Basecoat or coat-on-coat. Prevents aeration on deep-grained timbers such as crown-cut mahogany. Meets requirements of FIRA standard 6250:2005 for horizontal surfaces (excluding kitchen worktops. It can also be tinted up to 5% with Morrells Light Fast Stains.

Ensure that all wooden surfaces are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris, waxes and oils.

Always do a small test area before starting any project to assess performance and end result. Follow the manufacturers instructions on the tin at all times.

Optimum application is achieved between 18°C and 22°C with good air movement and ventilation.

  1. Apply lacquer with a spray applicator
  2. Leave adequate time between coats
  3. Denib between coats to aid with adhesion
  4. Do not apply more than 3 coats in one day, as excessive coating weights can lead to cracking or lifting

Typical Finish: 1-3 coats at 75g/m2 per coat, coat on coat or over Morrells recommended basecoat/sealers.

Cleaning Equipment

Spray applicators can be cleaned after use with Morrells Equipment Cleaner.

Some Points of Note

  • Do not overcoat Morrells 280 Pre-Catalyst Lacquer with 1K or 2K Polyurethane (PU) products
  • This range is not suitable for "pulling over"
  • Use 2007/200 Anti-Chill Thinners when applying in conditions of high atmospheric humidity, using a maximum of 5% by volume
  • Use 2007/201 Retarder Thinners to slow down the drying in warm conditions, using a maximum of 5% by volume
  • Product should be stored above 5°C and protected from frost
  • Finished products should not be subjected to environments with temperatures of < 2°C

Using these products in systems outside these guidelines can lead to immediate and latent problems with the integrity of the finish.

Good product
I have used this on some bedroom units and sprays straight for the can with HVLP Devilbiss spray gun and looks good. I would warn you though that the sheen is more than you think so if you want a Matt buy the one below it otherwise you might be disappointed.

Consistent !
I always buy my spray finishes from WFD. Good prices and brilliant service - every time. Always reliable and consistent. I have to laugh though. The other thing that is always the same? The bent 5 ltr cans. Every time the cans are buckled in transit. Never a real problem, but they sure look a mess and you can't stack them.

Superb finish
Combined with the basecoat this provides a quick tough finish which has vastly sped up my finishing times and profitability. Definitely ordering more and in different % sheens.

Excellent results with this finish
It applies well with a brush and gives a good build of finish. I found that three coats on Oak gave the required results. In a reasonably heated workshop I was able to recoat in about an hour, so no time wasted waiting for it to dry. We seem to be being forced to use water based (acrylic) finishes, supposedly to save the planet, but in my experience they do not give the depth of finish that lacquers like this Morrells product gives.
