Overview

Overview

Back

Liberon Spirit Wood Dye is a spirit-based wood dye, suitable for use on new and reclaimed interior timbers. It may be over-coated with a wood wax, oil or varnish, and may also be used to tint French Polish.

All the colours can be mixed to give intermediate shades. This is especially useful if a new piece of timber has to be coloured to match a repair, or blend with an existing piece.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure the surface to be dyed is clean, dry and free from any dust, dirt or any other surfaces contaminants.

Bare Wood

  1. Fill any holes, splits or gaps with a suitable wood filler
  2. Ensure that the wood has been correctly and thoroughly sanded
  3. Remove all traces of sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth
  4. If required, wood can be cleaned or degreased with a white (uncoloured) cloth dampened with methylated spirit

Previously Treated Wood

  1. All existing finishes must be completely removed back to bare wood
  2. Old wax finishes can be removed with Woodleys Wax and Polish Remover
  3. Remove any existing varnish finishes with a suitable paint stripper or varnish remover
  4. Alternatively, old finishes can be removed by sanding, taking care to remove all traces of sanding dust

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Shake well before use.

Make sure you have sufficient dye to finish the work. If more than one tin of dye is required to complete the work, mix the tins together to ensure a uniform colour.

  1. Apply one liberal coat of Spirit Wood Dye with a natural bristle brush or lint-free cloth, working with the grain wherever possible
  2. Allow the stain to penetrate, then remove any excess with a clean cotton cloth
  3. For a stronger colour, apply a second coat after 4 hours and allow to fully dry

Some Points of Note

  • Application of a second coat may lift the first coat
  • Do not mix spirit-based dyes with water-based dyes
  • Do not mix this product with white spirit-based dyes
  • Caution must be taken when using French polish and Shellac-based sealers, as over-brushing may remove the stain
  • Caution must be taken when using oil-based finishes over Liberon Spirit Wood Dye. Keep brush strokes to a minimum as over brushing may lift out the colour

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once dry, Liberon Spirit Wood Dye can be sealed in with a suitable varnish, wood oil, wax or polish.

Very tricky to use
This is the 2nd time I've used this stain. It's very difficult to use to get an even coverage. You have to work extremely fast with it. I don't know if it's just this stain or stains in general.

Exceptional service, which goes with product and price. Would recommend both product and, especially, Wood Finishes Direct.

Always a great product
A great product, I use it a lot but water based stain is easier for people who don't stain often.

What it says on the tin
Easy to use and very effective for changing the colour of new wood - would buy again. The tin covers a large area if used sparingly.
