Overview

Overview

Back

Liberon Pure Tung Oil is ideal for surfaces such as kitchen worktops, tables and other interior and exterior wood.

Pure Tung Oil contains no added dryers and is a natural, non-toxic product which can be used on toys and objects in contact with food such as salad bowls etc. With it being a penetrating oil it allows the wood to age gracefully and develop a natural patina.

Please note: Pure Tung Oil enhances the natural colour and character of the wood, giving an almost damp like appearance. To get an indication of how the wood will look once oiled, slightly wet the bare wood with a clean cloth or sponge dampened with water.

Tung Oil is extracted from nuts and may cause an allergic reaction.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure the surface to be oiled is clean, dry and free from dust, dirt or any other surface contaminants.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project, to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Liberon Tung Oil is easily applied using a natural bristle brush or lint-free cotton cloth
  2. Dilute the first one or two coats with up to 50% white spirit, to help with application
  3. Leave the oil to penetrate for 20 to 30 minutes, then wipe off any excess oil using a clean, lint-free cloth
  4. Allow to dry for 24 hours between coats
  5. Apply further coats of Tung Oil as above, reducing the amount of white spirit with each coat, removing any surplus
  6. Allow a further 24 hours to dry
  7. Apply the last one or two coats of Tung Oil undiluted, wiping off any excess
  8. It is recommended to apply a minimum of 4 coats - more coats will be required for porous or external surfaces. The more coats applied, the more satin the sheen will become
  9. After the final coat has been applied, surplus removed, leave for 24 hours and wipe over again to aid drying and remove any oil that may have surfaced
  10. For best results gently rub with Liberon Ultra Fine (0000) Steel Wool between coats
  11. Leave for a few days before use to allow the oil to dry fully

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once fully dry, oiled interior wooden furniture may be finished with a wood polish to achieve an improved lustre.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Regular Cleaning

Oiled surfaces can be cleaned with a damp, lint-free cloth. Any spills should be wiped up immediately. For stubborn stains, a suitable wood cleaner for oiled surfaces can be used.

Maintenance

Liberon Pure Tung Oil needs to be regularly maintained. At least once or twice a year, depending on usage and exposure to the weather. Following the Preparation and Application instructions above. It is important to apply sufficient coats of oil to exposed external timbers, to give the initial protection.

Can I use this Tung Oil on exterior oak beams? I don't want to change the colour of them

Tung Oil can be used on this kind of project, but this will penetrate the timber and enrich the natural colours of the wood, darkening it as it soaks in. Give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Basically does what it says on the tin
This oil does what it says on the tin. I don't always sand my kitchen unit down first, only if it has obvious marks or stains on it. I make sure its clean of any food residue then wipe on the oil with a lint free muslin cloth. It has to be left for 24 hours untouched so I do this before I go away for a day or so. This oil certainly coats the wood making it stain and waterproof.

Brought out the colour of the wood Easy to apply Smells nice too
Refurbishing an old oak book case. Sanded off all the old varnish. Applied four coats as directed, one every 24 hours. Left for a week withe the occasional wipe down to remove excess. Very pleased with the finish. Nice colour.

Excellent product, excellent service
This is pure tung oil as opposed to the products found in DIY stores that are described as tung oil but are actually blended oils. The Liberon product is an excellent and consistent quality.

Well absorbed by the wood
Used on a kitchen top because of its natural properties. It’s hard wearing, non toxic and dries to a soft sheen. I used three coats leaving 24 hrs in between. On the first coat I mixed 50/50 white spirit to help absorption. Use a lint free cloth to remove the excess immediately. On the second coat I didn’t do this straight away and it dried quiet sticky. I resolved this by using the white spirit to rub off this layer. The final coat should be neat. The result is beautiful and odor free.
