Preparation

Preparation

To attain optimum results ensure the surface is structurally sound, dry, clean and free from dust, dirt or any other surface contaminants.

  • Any old, substandard and flaking paint will need to be removed either by sanding or with the use of a paint scraper
  • Extra caution needs to be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces as they could potentially contain hazardous levels of lead
  • If organic growth exists, such as mould, fungal, algal or lichen growths, then apply an antifungal, such as Sandtex Fungicidal Wash
  • Wash the surface with a suitable detergent to remove any dirt, grease, oil and dusty or powdery residues
  • Any surface defects need to be be plugged and sealed with an appropriate filler and sanded smooth
  • If required, rub down surfaces and then wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove dust
  • Softwood frames will need to be primed with an oil based or acrylic primer
  • Galvanised steel frames will need to be well weathered or primed with a suitable metal primer
  • If a calcium plumbate primer is used, then it will need to fully harden before applying Evo-Stik Linseed Oil Putty

Application

Application

Back

Always produce a test area prior to the full application to judge suitability and the final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions at all times.

  • Apply the putty to the rebate, insert the glass and bed in and secure with non rusting pins or sprigs
  • Apply to the front of the glass, trim off the excess and smooth the surface with a putty knife
  • Allow the surface of Evo-Stik Linseed Oil Putty to harden before overpainting, typically after 7-21 days, dependant on temperature and climatic conditions
