Overview

Overview

Back

Dulux Trade Polyurethane Varnish is suitable for use on interior wood, veneer, cork and chipboard.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be varnished are sound, clean and dry. New surfaces in particular must be fully dry before varnishing.

New or Bare Wood

  • Fill any surface defects, open joints etc with a compatible wood filler. Do not use linseed oil putty for making good
  • Thoroughly rub down all surfaces in the direction of the grain to provide a 'key', using 'wet flatting' methods where possible, then remove all traces of sanding dust with a damp, lint free cloth

Previously Treated Wood

  • Remove all loose and defective coatings that show signs of peeling, flaking, cracking or blistering, if necessary stripping back to bare wood
  • Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1970s paint surfaces as they may contain harmful lead

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to access product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before and during use to ensure a consistent finish.

Do not apply if surface or air temperature is 5°C or below. Dulux Trade Polyurethane Varnish should be brush applied only. Spray application is not recommended.

  1. Apply 2-3 coats of varnish with a synthetic brush in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Lightly rub down (denib) between coats, using a suitable grade of abrasive paper or denibbing pad, then wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth
  3. Allow 24 hours to fully dry

Maintenance

Wooden surfaces coated with Dulux Trade Polyurethane Varnish can be cleaned with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth. For stubborn scuffs and marks, a dedicated wood cleaner may be required.

A great varnish at a competitive price
I had already used this varnish on the interior of my log cabin and needed more for a second coat. Gave a nice finish. I can’t comment on longevity as yet, but fingers crossed performance is deserving of the high price.

Same great product it's always been
Good old fashioned solvent based varnish. It may not be the most environmentally friendly but produces better results more easily than the water based alternatives .

Dulux trade polyurethane MATT varnish
Seriously darkens the appearance of the light oak veneer AND has an appreciable level of sheen more like a satin than a matt. Very dissapointed. I had to remove the varnish and start again with alternative varnish

Excellent
Bought on recommendation , fantastic price from wood finishes Direct. The product is so good one coat was enough on our new oak doors. Love the Matt finish and so easy to apply.

Easy to apply, good finish, seems a bit delicate though
Bought for a table, it looks beautiful. Took longer to dry than it said, and I have managed to damage the surface even after 3 coats and 3 weeks later, so I'm not sure how hard-wearing it will be. Overall though, it was easy to get a good finish, and I do like it.

Easy to apply and a good finish a
Used this on a modern interior, oak veneer door that had previously been sprayed by the manufacturer. After very light sanding of the veneer, applied 3 coats and it looks and feels like new. A shame the matt varnish is not available in a smaller volume.

Still a 'trusted' brand and rightly so
Used this to varnish a log cabin. I'd tried a competitor's product and that had a green tinge. Hard to beat a big brand name, even if it cost more. Buy cheap, buy twice as they say.

Brilliant product and fast reliable service from wood finishes direct
First time using this varnish, I wanted something tough and durable to use on a new hardwood table top surface, put 3 coats of the varnish on and the table top now looks fantastic, easy to apply but make sure not to apply too thick and rub down lightly between coats

Great service and value from Wood Finishes Direct!
I needed a couple of 750ml tins of varnish for a job so checked out online prices. I normally buy the brand that says what it does on the tin. This 2.5 litre tin worked out at just over the price of 2 x 750ml tins so effectively you get almost 1 litre free. The product arrived well packed on a next day delivery (which is free). The Dulux varnish is more clear and goes on very smoothly. The finish is more like satin than matt but all the other brands are the same. I am very pleased with the quality of the product and would recommend it.
