Overview

Overview

Back

Curpinol Woodworm Killer is a clear, water-based woodworm killer for interior wood, formulated for the eradication and prevention of woodworm.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that wood to be treated is clean, dry (25% moisture content maximum) and free from bark and dirt.

  • Any previous treatments such as paint or varnish should be removed completely, by sanding back to bare wood
  • Open up infested areas as far as possible, cut away and burn all badly attacked wood, making any necessary structural repairs

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to test suitability on the timber to be treated. Follow the manufacturers instructions on the container at all times.

Application may be by brush, dip or coarse spray. Please Note: Rough sawn timber will absorb up to twice as much as planed wood.

Brush application:

  1. All surfaces should be flooded with Cuprinol Woodworm Killer, paying particular attention to end-grain and joints to ensure maximum protection
  2. Normally two or three liberal coats are required with subsequent coats applied before the first is dry
  3. The more woodworm treatment used, the better the protection achieved

Spray application:

For spray treatment, one flooded spray coat is equivalent to one brush coat and should be applied using a low pressure, coarse (non-atomising) compression spray.

With brush or spray treatment, it is important that good flowing coats are given. Excessive 'brushing out' to give a very low, thin rate of application will give poor results.

Please Note: Clean all brushes and spray equipment with warm water and rinse thoroughly after use.

Dip application:

Submerge the end(s) of the timber in to the Woodworm treatment for 15 seconds for insulating board; 3 minutes for timbers of small cross-section, plywood, hardboard, roof timbers, upper floor joists and internal studding; 10 minutes for framing timbers in external walls, timber in flat roofs and ground floor joists.

Eradication of insect attack including House Longhorn Beetle: Brush 2-3 uniform coats. Use a minimum of 1 litre per 3.5 to 5 square metres of timber.

For replacement timbers liable to House Longhorn and wood worm attack: Dip for at least 3 minutes or brush 2-3 uniform flood coats. Use a minimum of 1 litre per 3.5 to 5 square metres of timber. Ensure timber is fully dry (allow 3 days) before laying plastic floor tiles, foam or rubber backed carpet, underlay, insulation in lofts, etc. After full drying, most glues, fillers and knotting solutions can be used as normal.

Cleaning Up

During application avoid spilling, splashing or over-spraying on surrounding surfaces since stains can be difficult to remove. Clean off splashes etc with white spirit while still wet, followed by soap and water. If stains on plaster occur following the use of recommended products they should be allowed to dry and can then normally be over-painted with emulsion paint. Brushes can be cleaned after use in warm, soapy water.

Some Points of Note

  • Cuprinol Woodworm Killer (WB) is harmful to bees. Do not use on beehives or bee keeping equipment
  • This product is not suitable for application in wet conditions
  • Rubber, bitumen and some plastics are softened and stained by the liquid product. Avoid over-spraying or runs on to these materials. Be especially careful with rubber insulated electric cables and plastic flooring materials
  • Complete drying of product (6 - 8 weeks) is essential before plastic flooring or rubber backed carpets are laid or hanging vinyl wall papers. If long drying is not possible, a vapour barrier, such as a heavy duty polythene sheet may be used
  • Glues applied before treatment will not be affected. Wood can be glued normally with most types of wood glue once the carrier solvent has dried
  • A knotting solution may be used after preservative treatment (before filling and painting), once treatment is dry

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once fully dry and suitably prepared, wooden surfaces treated with Cuprinol Woodworm Killer (WB) can be finished with a suitable interior wood paint, stain, varnish or polish.

Good Product for use with Furniture
I bought this Cuprinol Woodworm Killer to treat an antique Georgian mahogany bureau that had suffered from some attack by woodworms on the softwood sections at some previous point in its history. This product is solvent-based and is therefore recommended for use on old furniture (unlike water-based products). It was easy to apply by brush and it soaked readily into the wood. The smell of the solvent did linger for sometime after using two coats of the product liberally applied over all the non-polished/non-waxed areas of the piece. However, I am confident that the bureau is now protected against any further woodworm attacks for some time and poses no threat to other wood within the house.
