Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from dirt, debris and other surface contaminates.

Bare or New Timber

  1. If necessary, brush surfaces with a stiff brush or broom before treating to remove any loose surface matter
  2. Areas affected by mould, algae or fungi should first be treated with a suitable garden cleaner prior to application
  3. All rotten timber must be cut out and replaced
  4. Any holes, gaps or splits in the surface of the wood can be filled with Cuprinol All Purpose Wood Filler or Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler

Previously Coated Timber

Existing surface coatings such as paint or varnish must be fully removed back to bare wood before using Cuprinol Wood Preserver by sanding or using a suitable wood stripper.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before beginning any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply if rain is likely before the product has fully dried. Stir contents of tin thoroughly before and during application to ensure a consistent finish.

  1. For best results, apply Cuprinol Wood Preservative with a suitable brush
  2. Apply a minimum of two even brush coats to give a uniform finish
  3. Apply evenly along the wood grain, avoiding splashing onto surrounding plants, brickwork, glass, PVC etc
  4. Any splashing should be cleaned up immediately (whilst still wet) with water and household detergent
  5. Excessive spillage on plants should be rinsed off immediately before drying
  6. Allow the previous coat to soak in before applying the next
  7. The preserver usually dries in 2-6 hours under normal weather conditions
  8. Where a strong colour change is desired, more coats may be required
  9. Recoat within 2-3 days of previous coat. If a longer period elapses, do a test area to ensure product is not repelled

Please Note: If using more than one can it is advisable to mix them together (after stirring thoroughly) and pouring into a larger container or finish painting in a corner before starting a new can.

Regular Cleaning

Surfaces treated with Cuprinol Ultimate Garden Wood Preserver can be cleaned at regular intervals with a dampened, lint-free cloth or Cuprinol Garden Furniture Cleaner.

Maintenance

If being used as a stand-alone treatment and not being over-coated, this product can be easily maintained. To maintain the surface finish and its protective properties, simply apply a fresh coat of Ultimate Garden Wood Preserver as and when required, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.

Back
After the drying time is there risk to aquatic life if the wood is close to a watercourse?

We would not recommend using this product in this type of environment as Cuprinol do not specify its safety. We would instead recommend using Barrettine Premier Universal Preserver as this is completely safe for plants and animals once it is dry.

Effective wood stain and protector
Provides an excellent finish, normally two coats required. Brushes easy to clean with washing up liquid and warm water.
Ken Evans. Autumn Brown, 4L (13/07/25)

Does what it says on the tin
Three coats applied to treated softwood. Very water repellent.
Keith. Country Oak, 4L (20/05/25)

Easy to use
Seems to be absorbed by the wood and hopefully protects my fence better than the cosmetic finishes of other products. Good colour finish. Time will tell.
Janet B. Spruce Green, 4L (06/05/25)

Very good product
Been using this preserver for a number of years now. Have not had to repaint yet! 3 coats is all it needs but you MUST do the coats within hours of each other. It has a waxy finish and will prevent even another coat of preserver going on top if you leave the time between coats too long.
Alan Taylor. Spruce Green, 4L (04/05/25)

Excellent
Easy to apply. Great colour that lasts.
Jed Hoyland. Red Cedar, 4L (24/04/25)

Very good product have used for the last 7 years
Have used this product for a long number of years without any problems and find the water based product far better than the spirit based one.
Colin Duxbury. Autumn Brown, 4L (14/04/25)

Used it before
Needed more to finish the fences and gates. Works for me and gives more protection than the cosmetic type finishes.
Janet Bombroffe. Spruce Green, 4L (14/03/25)

Good colour & lasts a bit longer than most fence paint
We needed this to repaint fence already painted in this colour. The "popular" DIY shops no longer stock Autumn Brown but Wood Finishes seem to stock so much more.
