Overview

Overview

Back

Colron Refined Wood Dye is a deeply penetrative acrylic, water-based wood dye with light fast pigments to ensure the colour doesn't yellow over time or fade on prolonged exposure to sunlight. Available in a range of attractive wood tones and easily overcoatable with any Colron wood wax, oil or lacquer

Preparation

Preparation

Back
  1. Old coatings of paint or varnish must be fully removed by sanding or with a suitable paint and varnish remover
  2. Previous wax coatings should be fully removed using Colron Wax Remover, and a scouring pad
  3. Any discoloured wood should be sanded until an original surface is visible
  4. Deeper scratches, dents or imperfections can be repaired using Colron Wax Repair Sticks or an alternative filler that is suitable for the project
  5. Sand lightly in the direction of the grain taking care not to over sand or 'polish' the surface
  6. Oily hardwoods such as teak, resinous areas and knots should be thoroughly washed with white spirit
  7. Remove any sanding dust using a brush or vacuum cleaner
  8. Wipe the surface to be stained with a lint-free cloth soaked with white spirit
  9. Allow to dry thoroughly

New wood

Depending on the type and age of new wood, resinous areas and wood knots may require treating prior to staining and finishing.

  1. Where a build up of surface resin is present, use a scraper or filler knife to remove the resin
  2. Wipe resinous areas such as wood knots with Methylated Spirit to remove any surface wood resins

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Colron Dye can be applied with a soft, lint free cloth such as the Colron Craftsmens Cloths
  2. When treating large areas such as doors or floors apply the wood dye to one length of floorboard or a section of door at a time to avoid overlaps
  3. Work quickly to maintain a wet edge
  4. Application by cloth or sponge will result in a lighter shade
  5. A one coat application is normally sufficient, but colour may be intensified and a more even finish achieved by the application of further coats
  6. Allow 1 hour between coats
  7. Do not apply more than three coats

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once dry, Colron Refined Wood Dye can be over-coated with the following compatible Colron finishes:

Product Finish Type
Colron Refined Danish Oil A traditional matt-satin sheen that adds a warm finish
Colron Refined Antique Oil A durable soft sheen finish for antiques and furniture
Colron Refined Clear Beeswax A matt finish with no colour change. Can be buffed for a higher sheen
Colron Refined Finishing Wax A superior blend of clear natural waxes for interior wood surfaces
Colron Refined Teak Oil A refined Teak Oil suitable for use on stained interior surfaces

Colron refined wood dye can be finished with an alternative interior wood oil, clear wax or wood varnish from other brands. Always do a test areas however to assess compatibility and final finish.

Are there still solvent based dyes available?

At the moment, yes. This is likely to change in the future as water-based products are much safer to use and are not harmful to the environment. If you prefer a solvent-based dye, have a look at Liberon Spirit Wood Dye.

Exceeded my expectations
I wasn't expecting it to be so easy to get such an even finish with a wood stain. I used a sponge for application.

Does Eaxctly what it says on the tin
Found this item had to source but delighted to find it from Wood Finishes Direct. Easy to apply but i did have to apply three coats to achieve the desired depth of colour. Nothing to do with the stain but the doors the stain was applied to. The doors had just been professionally stripped. Unfortunately with the number of doors I had to stain I could only purchase tins of 250ml. For some reason I couldn't find 500ml tins. Also this is for Finishes and not the Refined labelled tins.

Good quality stain, straight forward to apply
Spirit based stain, good coverage. Used on softwood, recommend a top coat of hard wax oil or something similar to protect the surface.
