Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that floors to be varnished are clean, dry, and free from all traces of dust, dirt, grit, oil, wax and any other surface contaminates before application.

Preparation of Wax, Oiled or Polished Floors

Floors pre-treated with waxes, polishes or other similar products cannot be overcoated with Bona Traffic GO and should be fully sanded back to bare wood to at least 120 grit, then primed with a suitable wood primer.

Bare Wooden Floors

For bare, freshly sanded floors it is recommended to use a wood primer. Primers help with adhesion between the varnish and floor and can help with the colouration of the final finish.

Product Use
A ready-to-use primer for use with the Bona range of varnishes
Bona Natural Primer Designed to preserve the impression of raw, untreated wood
Bona Intense Primer A 100% polyurethane based primer for finishes requiring better adhesion
Bona White Primer A high quality wood primer that creates a 'white-washed' effect on wood flooring
Bona Amber Primer Wood primer for oak and darker tropical species of wood. GreenGuard approved
Bona Classic UX Primer A forgiving primer with medium light wood colouration

Please note: Allow Bona traffic GO to reach room temperature before use.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Shake well before use. Ensure room temperature does not fall below 13°C during application and drying. Thoroughly read and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

The following applicators are recommended for application of Bona Traffic GO:

Product Description
Bona Swivel Head Applicator A specialist 46cm floor applicator for professional floor finishers that is used in conjunction with the Bona Applicator Sleeve.
Bona Lacquer Roller A synthetic, medium pile roller for the application of Bona varnishes.
  1. Shake the lacquer can forcefully for a minimum of one minute before use or before decanting smaller quantities
  2. Apply at a rate of approximately 8/10sq meters per 1 litre with a roller or floor applicator
  3. Start at the edges and then roll with a smooth flowing action alternately across and with the grain of the wood
  4. Avoid accumulations of finish and overlap wet-in-wet without interruption
  5. Allow to dry before applying the next coat. Anticipate slightly longer drying time for each layer that is applied
  6. If necessary, lightly sand or denib using a screen or the Bona Scrad System, grit P150 or finer before applying the final coat

Where a longer drying time is required due to high temperature and/or low humidity, Bona Retarder can be added to the varnish to increase the 'open time' of the product.

Please Note: If the previous layer of finish has been allowed more than 24 hours drying time then an intermediate sanding is always required. The floor will take light foot traffic approximately 8 hours after the final application and may be put into full use after 24 hours. Allow the surface to dry for at least three days before covering with carpets or other floor coverings. Also avoid placing heavy objects or damp mopping the floor during this time.

Regular Cleaning

Lacquered floors should be dry swept or vacuumed on a regular basis to remove surface particles of grit, dirt and small stones that could scratch or mark the surface. Wooden floors should never be saturated with water or cleaned with household detergents or cleaners, as part of a regular cleaning routine, as these could significantly reduce longevity and performance of the floor varnish.

For more thorough cleaning and to remove surface scuffs and other marks, Bona have a range of pH-balanced floor cleaners and mops for the job. For regular cleaning the pre-mixed, ready-to-go formulas provide a quick solution whilst the concentrated products are good for scale of economy and deeper cleaning requirements.

Bona Floor Mops and Floor Cleaners

Product Description
Bona Cleaner Concentrate A concentrated version of Bona Wood Floor Cleaner. Add water to clean up to 2,000 square meters of flooring per litre of concentrate
Bona Premium Wood Floor Spray Mop An easy-to-use spray mop with changeable microfibre heads and cartridges
Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Spray An everyday floor cleaner in a convenient 1L trigger spray bottle

Bona Traffic GO Renovation

To restore the appearance of Bona Traffic GO that has become dull or covered in minor scratches, the following products can be used.

Product Description
Bona Freshen Up A ready-to-use, maintenance coating to refresh the appearance of Bona Traffic GO
Bona Wood Floor Refresher A durable and protective maintenance coat that is ready-to-use, offering extended protection against wear.
Bona Polish Creates a durable wear layer for previously varnished floors. Available in both a Matt and Gloss finish
Bona Wood Floor Polish A ready-to-use, water-based maintenance coating for previously varnished or painted wooden floors

What is Bona Traffic GO best used for?

Bona Traffic GO is designed for protecting wooden floors that need a hard wearing clear lacquer, including busy domestic rooms and commercial areas with high footfall.

Do I need to add a hardener or mix anything before use?

No mixing is required. Bona Traffic GO contains a built in hardener, so you simply shake the bottle well and it is ready to apply straight away.

How many coats of Bona Traffic GO should I apply?

Two coats are normally recommended for full protection. On sanded bare wood or high traffic areas, three coats may be preferred for maximum durability.

How long does Bona Traffic GO take to dry and cure?

It is usually dry enough to recoat after around 2 to 3 hours. Light foot traffic is possible after 24 hours, with full cure developing over the following days.

Can Bona Traffic GO be applied over an existing lacquered floor?

Yes, as long as the floor is clean, de greased and lightly abraded to provide a key. If the previous finish is unknown, carry out a small test area first.

What coverage can I expect from Bona Traffic GO?

Coverage is typically up to 10m² per litre per coat depending on the timber type, surface condition and application method.

What applicators should I use for the best finish?

Apply using a Bona roller, short pile microfiber roller or lacquer applicator to maintain an even film. Work in small sections and keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
