Overview

Overview

Back

Primarily used in busy commercial areas such as shopping centres and other public locations, it is also recommended for use in schools and nurseries due to its very low indoor emissions. Bona Traffic HD Anti Slip is equally suitable for use on wooden staircases and floors in domestic and communal environments, to provide excellent slip resistance.

  • Need a high performance floor varnish but without slip resistsance? Try the standard Bona Traffic HD
  • Also available, Bona Mega Varnish, a durable single-part varnish for domestic environments

Please Note: Bona Traffic HD Anti-slip can also be used as a top coat over Bona Craft Oil 2K to produce beautifully stained, yet highly durable wooden floors with anti-slip properties.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that floors to be varnished are clean, dry and free from all traces of dust, dirt, grit, oil, wax and any other surface contaminates before application.

Preparation of Pre-Varnished Floors

Bona Traffic HD Anti-slip will normally have very good adhesion to pre-varnished flooring, however, it is advisable to check the intercoat adhesion prior to overcoating. To check intercoat adhesion, apply a coat of Bona Traffic HD Anti-slip to a pre-prepared area. Allow the coating to set for 3 days then scratch the treated floor surface gently with a coin. If the Bona Traffic finish stays firmly attached to the surface, the adhesion is satisfactory and the main application can begin.

Preparation of Wax, Oiled or Polished Floors

Floors pre-treated with waxes, polishes or other similar products cannot be overcoated with Bona Traffic HD Anti-slip and should be fully sanded back to bare wood to at least 120 grit, then prime.

Bare Wooden Floors

For bare, freshly sanded floors it is recommended to use a wood primer. Primers help with adhesion between the varnish and floor and can help with the colouration of the final finish.

Product Use
Bona Classic Primer A ready-to-use primer for use with the Bona range of varnishes
Bona Natural Primer Designed to preserve the impression of raw, untreated wood
Bona Intense Primer A 100% polyurethane based primer for finishes requiring better adhesion
Bona White Primer A high quality wood primer that creates a 'white-washed' effect on wood flooring
Bona Amber Primer Wood primer for oak and darker tropical species of wood. GreenGuard approved

To stain the floor prior to finishing, consider Bona Craft Oil 2K.

Please note: Allow Bona traffic HD Anti Slip to reach room temperature before use.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. To mix smaller quantities of lacquer and hardener, mix the required amounts using the Bona Traffic Mix Bottle

Optimal application conditions are between 18-25°C and 30-60% relative air humidity. High or low temperatures and humidity may shorten or lengthen the drying time. Minimum temperature for use is 13°C.

Where a longer drying time is required due to high temperature and/or low humidity, Bona Retarder can be added to the varnish to increase the 'open time' of the product.

Mixing in the Hardener

  1. Add appropriate mix of hardener to the lacquer
  2. Shake immediately for a minimum of 1 minute
  3. The mixture of hardener and lacquer should be used directly or at least within 4 hours of mixing

Suitable Bona Applicators

Product Description
Bona Applicator Sleeve 46cm applicator sleeve that is used in conjunction with the Bona Swivel Head Applicator, a specialist floor applicator for professional floor finishers.
Bona Lacquer Roller A synthetic, medium pile roller for the application of Bona varnishes and used in conjunction with the Bona Roller Handle

Application Technique

  1. Apply the lacquer using a suitable Bona applicator, as seen above
  2. Apply with a smooth flowing action, avoiding build up
  3. Always maintain a "wet edge" to avoid any overlaps
  4. Allow 2 - 3 hours between sanding/denibbing or re-coating
  5. Slightly increase drying time after each coat
  6. Apply a further coat in the same manner
  7. If necessary, lightly sand or denib using a fine grade sandpaper before the final coat. This is needed if a previous coat has been allowed longer than 24 hours to dry

Take reasonable precautions with the finish during the first few days after application:

  • Do not cover (use protective sheets) or lay carpets onto the treated area during the first 3 days following application
  • Appropriate protective measures (i.e. felt pads) should be taken for table and chair legs or other objects which could mark the floor
  • Immediately wipe up any water or other liquid spillages and take particular care with flower pots

Floors treated with Bona Traffic HD Anti Slip can be subjected to light foot traffic in 8 hours after final application and ready for full use in 12 hours. Allow at least 3 days for the product to fully cure before laying carpets, rugs and moving furniture.

Regular Cleaning

Lacquered floors should be dry swept or vacuumed on a regular basis to remove surface particles of grit, dirt and small stones that could scratch or mark the surface. Wooden floors should never be saturated with water or cleaned with household detergents or cleaners, as part of a regular cleaning routine, as these could significantly reduce longevity and performance of the varnish.

For more thorough cleaning and to remove surface scuffs and other marks, Bona have a range of pH-balanced floor mops and cleaners for the job. For regular cleaning the pre-mixed, ready-to-go formulas provide a quick solution whilst the concentrated products are good for economy and deeper cleaning requirements.

Product Description
Bona Premium Wood Floor Spray Mop An easy to use spray mop with changeable Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Refill Cartridge
Bona Microfiber Floor Mop An easy to use floor mop with changeable, washable, Velcro backed Microfiber Cleaning Pads
Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Spray An everyday floor cleaner in a convenient 1L trigger spray bottle
Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Refill A ready to use 4L refill for topping up Bona Spray Mop Cartridges and Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Trigger Spray bottle
Bona Cleaner Concentrate A concentrated version of Bona Wood Floor Cleaner. Add water to clean up to 2,000 square meters of flooring per liter of concentrate

Repair

For maintenance and long term protection of the surface, floors can be overcoated at intervals with additional coats of Bona Traffic HD Anti-Slip.

Please note: Bona maintenance products or polishes cannot be used with Bona Traffic HD Anti Slip as the slip resistance qualities will be affected.

Good product, easy to use
This is a good anti slip varnish. Easy to apply - I'm not a professional. SIGNIFICANTLY reduced us slipping on the floors. It's hard to slide about even if you actively try to, and even with just socks on. Nice finish... describes itself as 'matt' and certainly its not glossy, but I'd say somewhere between matt and gloss in look.

Excellent finish
Having spent hours on my knees restoring thr old oak floor in our bathroom, I wanted a good non-slip finish. Having previously used Bona Traffic in our hall, I went for Bona Non-slip. It is easy to mix and apply, and the finish is superb. The only way it could be improved would be if it was supplied with a small measuring pot for the hardener; I eventually bought an Oxo kitchen one! But that is a niggle, the floor looks fabulous with a nice Matt finish. Bona isn't cheap, but it is well worth the expense and so much better than the standard off the shelf products.
