Overview

Overview

Back

Bona Mix and Fill is specifically designed to be mixed with wood dust to create a natural looking wood filler. Fills cracks, splits and gaps and looks more like the surrounding wood than traditional wood fillers. It can be easily sanded, stained and finished for a more natural-looking repair.

Please Note: This filler can only be used when mixed with wood dust from sanding, ideally from the project at hand. It cannot be used as a stand-alone clear filler.

  • Also available: Bona Mix and Fill Plus for lighter coloured wood types and for gaps up to 3mm wide
  • Alternatively, try Bona Gap Master for filling long, linear gaps between floor boards and skirting boards

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Surfaces to be repaired must be clean, dry and free from contaminates and surface coatings.

New Wood

  1. New wood should be sanded with a 100-120 grit sandpaper
  2. Collect the sanding dust for mixing with the Bona Mix and Fill
  3. Ensure that areas to be filled are clean and dust free before filling
  4. Indents may need scoring or coarse sanding to provide a key for the filler to adhere to the wood

Old Wood

  1. Old wood should be sanded back to clean, bare wood.
  2. Sanding dust from the first sanding, that may contain varnish, wax or oil should be discarded
  3. Once all top coatings have been removed, re-sand with 100-120 grit sandpaper and retain the sanding dust
  4. Ensure that areas to be filled are clean and dust free before filling
  5. Indents may need scoring or coarse sanding to provide a key for the filler to adhere to the wood

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

  1. Bona Mix and Fill should be mixed with the retained sanding dust from the job at hand to a putty-like texture suitable for filling the joint or split in the wood
  2. The filler mix can then be easily applied using a Bona Flat Bladed Trowel
  3. Once dried, sand back the repaired area to a flat surface using a 100 to 120 grit abrasive

Finishing

Back
Can Bona Mix and Fill be used to fill gaps between floor boards?

No, structural floorboards always bounce slightly on the joists. This product does not offer enough flexibility to cope with the movement and is more suited to gaps between parquet blocks or minor defects

How much Mix and Fill do I need for 20m² ?

As every surface will be unique, with a variation of depths and widths in gaps/ holes etc there isn't really a one size fits all answer.

Effective, easy to use
Filling gaps in newly laid reclaimed parquet and this worked beautifully. You do have to work quickly as it dries fast, so don't use all the liquid in one go! Make sure you have a little left to mix as you go along. Used with fine sawdust from sanding and looks beautiful. Always impressed with Bona products.

Very disappointing product
I had a very bad experience with this product. It left grey water stains on my solid oak floor and all the gaps required refilling as the filled areas were full of tiny holes. Also it dries rigid and brittle. I replaced it with Bona Gapmaster which was so much better and is somewhat flexible even when dry. A lot of trouble and not a cheap product. I had an excellent customer service experience with Wood Finishes Direct in resolving the matter though.

Excellent
I have always mixed dust with PVA to fill cracks, which made a sticky, hard to work with filler. Mix and fill plus gives a smooth filler that goes into cracks really easily.
