Overview

Overview

Back

Bona Gap Master can be used to fill gaps between a variety of interior wooden surfaces including floorboards and skirting boards, prior to overcoating with a wood primer, varnish or wood oil.

Coverage is dependent on gap width and depth.

The table below gives coverage guidelines per tube:

Gap Depth Gap Width (mm)
(mm) 3 7 10 12
3 33m 14m 10m 8m
5 20m 8m 6m 5m
7 14m 6m 4m 3.5m
10 10m 4m 3m 2m

Please note: Larger gaps may require packing with rope or cord to prevent the Gap Master from simply falling through the gap. The Gap Master is then used to fill the gap between the cord and the surface of the floor.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from any dust, dirt or other surface contaminants. Wider gaps in floors may require rope, foam backing rod or other methods to prevent the filler from falling through the gap during application.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area first and read the manufacturer's instructions on the tube. Do not apply if risk of rain or frost. For the best results, application temperature should be above: 13°C.

  1. Cut the dome seal of the tube with a sharp knife, taking care not to damage the thread
  2. Screw the nozzle on to the tube
  3. Cut the nozzle at an angle to suite the size and shape of the gap to be filled
  4. Slowly squeeze the mastic gun trigger to start the flow from the nozzle
  5. Apply as a continuous bead ensuring contact is made with all surfaces of the gap
  6. Immediately smooth the bead with a flat edge, sponge or wet finger
  7. Allow 24 hours to dry, then lightly sand the surface

Please note: When fully dry and ready for sanding, it is best done using a fine abrasive by hand or using hand tools that can be run at a slow speed. This is because Bona Gap Master is designed to remain flexible. This is an excellent property for use with a material like wood, which expands and contracts. This flexibility makes it difficult to sand when it is very soft (insufficiently dry) or a too-aggressive sanding method is used. Wider, deeper gaps will require longer to fully dry prior to sanding.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once dry and sanded as required, Bona Gap Master can be overcoated with a range of Bona Wood Primers, Bona Wood Varnishes or Bona Wood Oils.

Can this product be used for filling gaps between floor and skirting board?

Bona Gap Master is perfect for filling and sealing the gap under skirting board edges or between skirting boards and walls. It's flexible so can move with the wood of the floor and skirting boards, can be sanded smooth when fully dry and is available in a range of colours to blend in with pre or previously finished floors, skirting boards and walls. This makes it the ideal choice as a skirting board filler.

Great
Easy to use, very very flexible but because of this can be difficult to clean up excess when Dried so definitely make sure you remove as much excess as possible before it dries. It will make your life a lot easier.

Replacing 25 year old product
Renewing product which has cracked and come away from the floorboards it was sealing. Annoying that it did need replacing and was letting in drafts, but it had been in place for 25 years. Removing the old sealant was very easy and installing the new was straightforward. Product arrived very promptly and bog oak is a much more appropriate colour for pine floorboards than other sealants which have a much more restricted range of colours.

Excellent product
Arrived quickly and well packaged. Easy to use and has nicely filled the gaps between the floorboards. As they say when using it, it can be difficult to wipe up the surplus on the wood, I chose not to use masking tape but realise that would have given a better finish. I wiped off the surplus with a damp cloth and best to do this immediately.

Flexible filler
Very easy to use especially as it is water based. Just a couple of things to note. I used this to fill between floor boards and there is some shrink back which wasn't an issue for me but could be in some situations. Also, in cold and humid conditions this can take quite a long time to dry. In my case in an unheated renovation project in West coast Scotland in February 48hrs+. It does say this on the tube but it is as well to plan for this if on a similar job. It overcoated with fiddes clear glaze.

Actually flexible and does fill gaps
Unlike the competition this actually does what it says on the tin (tube actually but you get the drift) flexible easily sand-able not chalky or crumbly would absolutely recommend it may be a few pound more expensive but it is actually better value as does what it should and makes a brilliant finish

Does exactly what it says it will do
We have now purchased this product 3 times. Initially we wondered if it would fill the gaps in our floorboards but it did such a great job that we ordered more to complete the entire room. It really does do what it says it will and it fills the gaps.

Good product range, price and service
I found Duralay underlay easy to fit and seal with waterproof gaffer tape. Not many suppliers supplied it in the wider width and although this is heavier, I found it easier to lay. This was recommended by our flooring supplier and I’m very happy with it

Great quality and finish
Quality product, hardly any waste due to various plank sizes.
