Overview

Overview

Back

Bona Domo Varnish is a ready to use water based polyurethane lacquer. Providing a good build and film clarity means it can be used from the start of a project through to the finish and is primarily designed for residential floors. By using a quick drying formulation and with being easy to abrade and apply, Bona Domo is a long lasting coating that offers good durability.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure the floor is acclimatised to its end use environment. If the project area has been previously oiled or varnished, then remove this layer through sanding down to the bare wood.

  • Remove any contaminants such as oil or grease with a suitable detergent
  • Sand the surface to a flat finish, with the final sanding performed with using 120 grit sandpaper
  • Clean any dust or grit from the floor by either sweeping or with the use of a vacuum cleaner
  • For filling small gaps between floor boards or skirting boards, use Bona Gap Master Filler

If being applied to an untreated wooden floor there are two options for the final preparation:

Option One:
  • Apply a suitable primer for the project, with all Bona primers being fully compatible
  • Light sanding with a 150 grit sandpaper
Option Two:
  • Apply Bono Domo
  • Light sanding with a 150 grit sandpaper

Please note: For floors where there is a risk of sidebonding, such as endgrain floors, softwood plank floors and hardwood floors with underfloor heating, it is always recommended to use a primer.

On tropical wood species, it is recommended to use Bona Intense Primer due to a possible reaction with the natural salts in the wood

Back

Always do a test area to judge product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to achieve the best results.

  • Apply in temperatures above 13°C, with the optimal range being between 18-25°C
  • Thoroughly shake the container to ensure the sheen and the lacquer are properly blended
  • To apply Bona Domo use a suitable roller, such as Bona Synthetic Lacquer Roller
  • Use a smooth flowing motion to spread the lacquer evenly, employing the "wet edge" technique of slightly overlapping each stroke
  • Allow two hours between coats, with a maximum of two coats being applied in 24 hours
  • If more than 24 hours have elapsed between coats, then lightly abrade the surface to help with adhesion of the new coat

Please note: Light foot traffic can be resumed after 24 hours from application and allow the surface to fully dry for 1 week before laying rugs or floor coverings onto the surface. Also, avoid mopping the area in that time.

To keep the floor in optimum condition, it is reccomended to clean the area reguarly with Bona Premium Wood Floor Spray Mop

Top tips for keeping floors looking their best:

  • Vacuum or sweep your floors regularly, at least a couple of times per week
  • Remove spills promptly
  • Don't let sand, dirt or grit build up as they can act like sandpaper, abrading and dulling your floor finish
  • Lay mats at exterior doors to trap sand and grit
  • Use rugs in high traffic pathways, at the ends of stairs and near doorways
  • Avoid rubber backing or non-ventilated rugs
  • Use protective pads or caps on furniture legs

Please Note: Do not clean wooden floors with excessive water, steam cleaners or household cleaning products as these may cause damage to the floor finish. In the worst cases they may even cause damage to the flooring such as swelling or warping.
