Bollom Flameguard Ultra Vinyl Matt Topcoat

Good surface preparation is essential for adhesion and the correct performance of the Bollom Flameguard system. Ensure surfaces are sound, clean and dry, removing any loose, poorly adhered or incompatible coatings before application.

Take extra care when removing or sanding paint applied before the 1960s, as it may contain lead; avoid creating dust and follow appropriate guidance for safe removal and disposal.

1. Remove dust, dirt, grease, oil, wax and other surface contamination that could affect adhesion with a suitable cleaner like Zinsser Universal Degreaser and Cleaner
2. Scrape away loose, peeling, blistered or flaking paint until a firm, well-adhered surface is reached
3. Remove existing coatings completely where their condition, adhesion or compatibility with the Flameguard system is uncertain
4. Wet abrade existing gloss and eggshell finishes to provide a suitable key, then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove residues
5. Repair cracks, holes and other surface defects with a suitable filler, such as Prestonett Interior Filler, and allow repaired areas to dry fully before sanding smooth
6. Remove sanding dust and other loose material to leave the surface clean and ready for coating
7. Apply Bollom Flameguard Ultra Primer Undercoat to bare or previously painted non-combustible surfaces, or ensure the specified Bollom intumescent basecoat on wood or steel is even and fully dry before applying the Vinyl Matt Topcoat

Before coating the full area, apply Bollom Flameguard Ultra Vinyl Matt Topcoat to a small test patch to check adhesion, appearance and the finished result. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and the specification for the complete fire protection system throughout the job.

1. Check that the specified primer or intumescent basecoat has been applied correctly and is even, clean and fully dry before starting
2. Stir the Vinyl Matt Topcoat thoroughly to ensure the paint has a consistent colour and texture
3. Apply an even coat using a brush or roller, working systematically to avoid missed areas and excessive build-up
4. Use the product undiluted. Adding water can affect its performance and the specified coverage rate
5. Apply the required number of coats at the stated coverage rate for the substrate and coating system. These requirements must be followed to achieve the specified fire rating
6. Keep both the air and surface temperature between 5°C and 30°C during application and drying. Relative humidity must remain below 75%
7. If a further coat is needed, allow the first to dry for at least 4 hours at 20°C before recoating. Cooler or more humid conditions may extend the drying time

Bollom Flameguard Ultra Vinyl Matt Topcoat forms the final coat of the specified fire protection system and does not require a separate varnish or sealer. Allow the coating to dry before putting the area back into use.

Do not apply other decorative coatings over the completed system without confirming their compatibility with Bollom, as this may affect its fire protection performance.

Can Bollom Flameguard Ultra Vinyl Matt Topcoat be used on wood?

Yes. It can be applied over Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat on suitable bare or previously painted interior wood, provided the complete system is applied to the specified coverage rates.

Can it be applied to previously painted walls?

Yes, provided the existing coating is sound, well adhered and compatible with the specified system. Remove loose paint, prepare the surface thoroughly and apply Bollom Flameguard Ultra Primer Undercoat before the topcoat.

Do I need a primer or basecoat?

That depends on the surface. Bare and previously painted non-combustible surfaces require Bollom Flameguard Ultra Primer Undercoat. Wood and steel require the appropriate specified Bollom intumescent basecoat.

Can I thin the paint?

No. Bollom Flameguard Ultra Vinyl Matt Topcoat must be applied undiluted. Follow the specified coverage rate to maintain the required fire protection performance.

How many coats are needed?

The number of coats depends on the substrate and the Bollom coating system beneath it. Two coats are specified over primed non-combustible surfaces; one coat is normally sufficient over the specified intumescent basecoats, although a second may be needed when covering a strongly contrasting colour.

How long should I wait between coats?

Allow at least 4 hours at 20°C before applying another coat. Lower temperatures or higher humidity may increase the drying time.
