Bollom Flameguard Ultra Gloss Topcoat is a solvent-based protective and decorative finish for specified Bollom fire protection systems on interior wood and steel. It provides a hard-wearing white gloss finish and can be applied by brush or roller.
When applied over Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat on suitable wood, the complete system is tested to BS EN 13501-1:2018. It achieves B-s1, d0 on previously painted wood and B-s2, d0 on bare wood. These classifications mean:
- B indicates very limited contribution to fire
- s1 indicates low smoke production for the system on previously painted wood
- s2 indicates a higher permitted level of smoke production than s1 for the system on bare wood
- d0 indicates no flaming droplets or particles under the specified test conditions
Suitability
Suitable for new and previously painted interior masonry and other compatible non-combustible surfaces, including surfaces previously coated with up to 10 layers of conventional paint when used as part of the appropriate Flameguard system. It can also be used as the decorative topcoat within specified Flameguard systems for suitable timber and wood-based surfaces. Always use the appropriate primer, basecoat and topcoat combination for the surface being treated and the required level of fire protection.

Bollom Flameguard includes a range of primers, basecoats and decorative topcoats designed to work together as specified fire protection systems. The correct combination will depend on the substrate, its existing coatings and the required finish.

Good surface preparation is essential for adhesion and the correct performance of the Bollom Flameguard system. Ensure surfaces are sound, clean and dry, removing any loose, poorly adhered or incompatible coatings before application.
Take extra care when removing or sanding paint applied before the 1960s, as it may contain lead; avoid creating dust and follow appropriate guidance for safe removal and disposal
- Remove dust, dirt, grease, oil, wax and other surface contamination that could affect adhesion with a suitable cleaner like Zinsser Universal Degreaser and Cleaner
- Scrape away loose, peeling, blistered or flaking paint until a firm, well-adhered surface is reached
- Remove existing coatings completely where their condition, adhesion or compatibility with the Flameguard system is uncertain
- Wet abrade existing gloss and eggshell finishes to provide a suitable key, then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove residues
- Repair cracks, holes and other surface defects with a suitable filler, such as Prestonett Interior Filler and allow repaired areas to dry fully before sanding smooth
- Remove sanding dust and other loose material to leave the surface clean and ready for coating
- Apply Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat where required for the substrate and specified fire protection system

Always test a small area before application to confirm compatibility, adhesion and the final appearance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and ensure the surface has been correctly prepared before starting.
- Stir the product thoroughly before and during application to maintain an even consistency
- Apply evenly using a good quality brush or suitable roller, avoiding excessive spreading of the coating
- Do not thin Bollom Flameguard Ultra Gloss Topcoat before application
- Apply at the specified coverage rate to ensure the required amount of coating is deposited for the fire protection system
- Maintain an ambient and substrate temperature between 5-30°C during application and drying, with relative humidity below 75%
- Allow each coat to dry for a minimum of 16 hours at 20°C before applying the next coat
- Ensure the previous coat is fully dry before recoating and allow additional drying time in cooler or more humid conditions

Once dry, take care of the finished surface to maintain its appearance and the integrity of the Bollom Flameguard system. Avoid cleaning methods or subsequent coatings that could damage or compromise the protective finish.
- Allow the coating to dry and cure thoroughly before subjecting it to regular use or cleaning
- Remove light dirt and marks carefully using a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and harsh chemicals that could damage or wear away the coating
- Check painted surfaces periodically for cracking, peeling, impact damage or excessive wear
- Repair damaged areas using compatible Bollom Flameguard products appropriate for the substrate and existing system
- Prepare worn or damaged areas correctly before recoating to ensure good adhesion
- Seek technical advice before repairing significant damage or where the existing fire protection system is uncertain
