Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat

Wooden surfaces must be sound, clean and dry before applying Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat.

Please note: Paint applied before the 1960s may contain lead. Take appropriate precautions when preparing or removing old coatings.

• Remove dust, dirt, grease and other surface contamination with a suitable cleaner, such as Zinsser Universal Degreaser and Cleaner, that could affect adhesion
• Treat knots with a suitable knotting solution, like Colron Knotting Solution
• Ensure timber is at least 9mm thick and any existing decorative finish consists of no more than four sound coats that adhere firmly to the wood
• Repair any cracks or holes with a suitable fller, for instance Prestonett Multi Purpose Interior Filler and then sand flat once dry
• Scrape off loose or flaking paint to leave a firm, well-adhered surface. If the condition or adhesion of existing coatings is uncertain, remove them completely
• Wet abrade existing gloss and eggshell finishes, then rinse with clean water to remove residues
• Allow the surface to dry fully before painting

Always apply to a small test area before starting to check adhesion and the final appearance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin and in the technical data sheet.

• Stir thoroughly before use. Do not thin the paint
• Apply by brush or airless spray. If using a roller, lay off the wet coating with a brush to achieve a smooth finish
• Apply two coats at the specified coverage rate of 5m² per litre per coat. Do not spread the paint further, as the required coating thickness is essential to the tested fire performance
• Apply evenly, taking care to avoid runs and sags
• Allow at least 4 hours between coats at 20°C
• Leave the second coat to dry for at least 24 hours at 20°C before finishing with a Bollom Flameguard Ultra topcoat

Please Note: During application and drying, air and surface temperatures must remain between 5°C and 30°C, with relative humidity below 75%. For airless spraying, use a pump such as a Graco Ultra Max II or equivalent, a tip size of 0.019-0.029" (0.48-0.73mm), a tip pressure of 3500psi (approximately 241bar) and a hose with an internal diameter of 0.375" (9.5mm).

Allow the final coat of Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat to dry for at least 24 hours at 20°C before applying Bollom Flameguard Ultra Gloss, Acrylic Eggshell or Vinyl Matt Topcoat. Overcoating is essential to complete the tested fire protection system.

When finished with a specified Bollom Flameguard Ultra topcoat, the system is tested to BS EN 13501-1:2018, achieving Class B-s1, d0 / Class B-s2, d0. The classification depends on the surface and complete coating system used. Follow the technical data sheets for both products.

Yes, provided the existing finish consists of no more than four coats of sound conventional decorative paint that adhere firmly to the timber. Remove loose or flaking paint and wet abrade existing gloss or eggshell finishes before application. The timber must be at least 9mm thick.

Yes. It must be overcoated with Bollom Flameguard Ultra Gloss, Acrylic Eggshell or Vinyl Matt Topcoat to complete the tested fire protection system. It cannot be left as the final finish.

Yes. Apply by brush, roller or airless spray. When using a roller, brush over the wet coating to achieve a smooth finish. Airless spraying requires suitable equipment and the settings specified in the technical data sheet. Do not thin the paint.

Apply two coats at 5m² per litre per coat. A 5-litre tin therefore covers approximately 12.5m² with both coats. Maintain the specified coverage rate, as the required coating thickness is essential to the tested fire performance.
