Overview

Overview

Back

Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is perfect for use on most exterior timber structures, including sheds, fences, trellises, pergolas and wooden gazebos. Absorbs into the wood with successive coats, building onto the surface, providing excellent water-repellency and beading. Solvent-based formulation for deeper penetration into the grain of the wood. Dries to between a Matt and a Satin finish, depending on the number of coats applied.

Please Note: The UV resistance only applies to the coloured variations, but not to the clear.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris, mould, algae and other surface contaminates.

New or Bare Timber

Previously Coated Timber

  • Any previous surface coatings such as paint, varnish or stain must be fully removed by sanding back to bare wood or using a paint stripper, unless it's a wood preservative treatment

Old Timber

  • Wood that has become decayed should be removed and replaced
  • Cut out and burn all decayed wood at least 45cm beyond the area of damage
  • Brush down the wood with a stiff broom or brush to remove any ingrained surface dirt and biological growth
  • Areas affected by mould, algae or fungi should be cleaned with a stiff brush or scraper then treated with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner
  • Any existing instances of woodworm can be treated with Barrettine Premier Woodworm Killer
  • Fill any gaps or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before starting any project to assess compatibility and end result. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Please Note: Wood should be dry for 24 hours before application and rain should not be forecast for at least 48 hours after application to achieve maximum benefit. Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is best applied in temperatures between 5°C - 25°C. Do not apply below 5°C or in direct sunlight.

Shake or stir well prior to and during application to ensure a consistent colour.

  1. Apply Barrettine Wood Treatment evenly with a brush, in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Apply 2-3 coats for optimum protection
  3. Leave a minimum of 6 hours drying time between coats, longer with smoother wood or with less favourable drying conditions

Cleaning Equipment

After use, brushes can be cleaned with Barrettine Brush Cleaner or Barrettine Paint Brush Restorer.

F.A.Q.

Back
Can Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment be sprayed?

Yes, we recommend using Selecta 7 Shed and Fence Spray System with this solution.

Can you use Wood Protective Treatment inside on timber cladding?

No, this product is designed for exterior use due to the active biocides. Consider Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Treatment for interior use instead.

Will this seal untreated wood?

The Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is a great topcoat for locking in a preservative or tanalised/ pressure treated timber. If you are using untreated wood, we would recommend the Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver or Barrettine Premier Universal Preserver instead as it contains a larger quantity of the ingredients to help protect against mould, algae, rot etc.

Can I use on inside of a shed floor and sides?

This product is an exterior product, but people do use it on the inside of the shed with really good ventilation. This can't be used on the flooring.

Can this be used on Thermowood or burnt cleaned off wood?

Yes. This can be used on Thermowood. It can also be used on burnt timber. Burnt timber, meaning 'shou sugi ban' which can really vary. Why not give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss your project.

How much coverage will I get for two coats?

Its 6m2 per L, so a 5L would do 15m2 with two coats.

Can this product be used on top of painted wooden furniture?

No. The paint will block absorption into the pores of the wood and likely discolour, even if it did sink into the wood. You would need to take the timber back to bare wood if you wanted to apply the Wood Protective Treatment.

Will the 5l size be sufficient to cover a 7x7 shed?

This would depend on the height of the shed and also if there were any glass doors or windows to consider. On average, you would need approx. 16.8L to cover this shed but with all the variables to consider, why not give our Woodcare Experts a call to discuss the sizes you need on 01303 213838.

Would this product be suitable and as a standalone product for some rough sawn untreated timber screening?

It would be suitable but not as a standalone product. The wood needs to be preserved if untreated. You are best-off using a wood preserver such as Barrettine Premier Universal Preserver or Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver followed by this product

Can the Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment be used on decking?

No, this product can not be used on decking. You would require a suitable Decking Preserver followed by a Decking Treatment

Can you paint over the Wood Protective Treatment?

No, this product will not allow paint to adhere to the surface. You will need to sand back to remove the product first.

Can this be applied in January?

You must be very cautious starting any exterior project in wet and cold months. The moisture content of the timber will be high, and the low temperature won't allow the timber to dry out and the product to cure properly. We suggest waiting until we get some better weather. Ideally temperatures should be above 5°C (including overnight)

How far will a 5L can cover?

You will get roughly 16m² coverage on two coats. This will differ if the timber is significantly porous or if you are using a spray application.

Will the Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment paint wood that's already painted with a water-based protection cream?

The Wood Protective Treatment will need to be able to penetrate the timber in order to protect it. It is likely that the protection cream has formed a barrier on the timber, they are usually silicon emulsion type coatings which will not allow the Barrettine Wood Protection Treatment to penetrate through.
