Preparation

Preparation

Back

Areas to be stripped should be cleaned to remove any surface dirt and debris that may restrict contact with Paint Panther Paint and Varnish Remover.

  • Ensure that any surfaces not intended to be stripped are covered and protected from this product
  • Paint Panther gel contains corrosive substances and should only be used in a well ventilated area with protective clothing such as gloves, safety glasses or goggles

Please note: Metal, plastics and other substrates other than wood and masonry should be subjected to a small test patch to determine compatibility before attempting larger areas.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area to assess performance and compatibility before starting any project. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Light scoring of the substrate may increase performance and efficiency but do not sand old coatings if they are believed to be pre-1970
  2. Using a suitable brush, apply a liberal coat of Barrettine Paint Panther about a square meter at a time
  3. Wait between 5 and 10 minutes, or when coating appears to blister before removing the gel
  4. Remove the wood stripping gel and stripped product with a Paint Panther Easy Grip Stripping Knife, scraper or steel wool (wearing protective gloves)
  5. Repeat treatment as necessary, stubborn areas may need several applications
  6. When finished, follow with a wash of white spirit

Can this be used on water-based, oil-based paint or lead paint?

Paint Panther is suitable for most solvent and water-based paints, varnishes and lacquers, we would recommend a test area to access performance and compatibility.

Is Paint Panther good for removing decking stain?

Although this product can be used on decking it is important to understand what you are trying to remove as the Paint Panther is specifically designed for removing film forming products such as paints and varnishes. I would suggest having a look at Ronseal Decking Stripper A test area would still be recommended to assess product suitability.

Easy to use With a good end result
I use this product to remove 60 year-old dark varnish for a medium size piece of furniture. I found it easy to apply and as long as you worked on small areas at a time not letting it dry out it was easy to remove the varnish either with a scraper or with wire wool. A Second coat was needed on a few small areas but the finished result was very successful

The paint stripper just didn’t work A waste of money
The paint stripper just didn’t work. A waste of money

It's ok
Admittedly, it is many years since I used paint stripper and although this did the job, it was not as good as I seem to remember paint stripper being. There was none of the quick blistering followed by the scraping off of a long strip, like a snake's skin. One tin was not enough for a windowsill, so I went to a local(ish) shop for more and it was the same brand, no choice. Maybe there is no longer an alternative to this.

Strips old varnish easily
I needed to scrape off old damaged varnish that had black water marks underneath from a wooden work surface … this worked perfectly. I scraped the surface first and then applied the stripper, scraping between each application and 3 applications in total. Works like a charm?

Fairly good
Used to remove dark finish off old Ercol furniture. The product was useful but a lot of scraping and sanding was still needed.

I followed instructions precisely Both the paint and the varnish I needed this for were probably 1960s, which may have been a factor The stripper was pretty good on the varnish but ineffective on the paint
I bought it as other reviewers said 'better than Nitromors'. I haven't used Nitromors since around 2005 and it may, for all I know, have been reformulated to be a bit more 'eco' since then and perhaps less effective. However, this was nothing like as effective on the paint as the Nitromors I used then - also on 1960s gloss paint. It did do a reasonable job on the old varnish, but it did not seem to live up to expectations from my point of view.

Not really sure
I am using this to strip the varnish off 30 year old oak kitchen doors. It is taking a fair amount of product and time and the results are patchy. It is much harder work that I expected. (I am not new to furniture restoration.) I would have really struggled without the stripping knife. I can say that at best my results are 90% removal but all doors will require a full sanding prior to waxing. Bought on the strength of the 5 star reviews which I no longer believe.
