Overview

Overview

Back

Sikkens Rubbol Primer, (previously known as Sikkens Rubbol Primer Plus) is a solvent-based primer and undercoat for use on interior and exterior wood, primed metals and hard plastics.

Perfect for wood with open pores, cracks and joints. Also suitable as a mid-coat for metal, before application of a Sikkens Rubbol top coat.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surfaces to be treated must be clean, dry, and free from all traces of dust, dirt, wax and grease. The moisture content of the timber must not exceed 18%. This figure will be 14% or lower for interior timbers.

New or Bare Timber

  1. Lightly abrade the wood surface and remove any sanding dust
  2. Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened in methylated spirit
  3. Any hard crystallized resin at the surface of the timber should be removed with a scraper
  4. Remaining resinous residues may be removed using a suitable solvent
  5. Any mould and algae growth must be eradicated using a suitable fungicide or mould and mildew remover
  6. Knotting may be used to reduce extractive discolouration, however, knotting is not always fully effective in sealing in resin, and the adhesion of subsequent coatings may be impaired
  7. When filling, use a suitable wood filler specifically designed for use with timber, as general or all purpose fillers are not suitable, particularly on external areas
  8. Where a superficial application of preservative to softwoods and hardwoods is deemed necessary, be sure to only use wood preservatives that do not contain wax or silicone
  9. Preservative pre-treatments must be fully dry prior to application
  10. Do not use this product on substrates which have had water-repellent preservative pre-treatments applied
  11. Where possible, the first coat should be applied all round prior to fixing
  12. Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

Previously Coated Timber

  1. Denib (lightly sand) using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper, in the direction of the grain
  2. Do not break through the surface coating, and remove any remaining dust after sanding
  3. Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate

Old Timber

  1. All damaged or decayed timber must be removed and replaced, cutting at least 25mm into sound timber
  2. When splicing in new sections consider whether the timber species natural durability is sufficient
  3. Then treat as Previously Treated Timber or New or Bare Timber as necessary

Metal and Hard Plastic

  1. For use only on non-ferrous metals and hard, non-porous plastics
  2. Make sure substrate is suitably primed with an appropriate primer for metal or hard plastic

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before use.

Timber

  1. Apply one coat with a good quality, synthetic bristle brush
  2. Apply thinly and evenly, in the direction of the wood grain, paying special attention to the end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of window sills
  3. Allow 18 hours drying time before applying a top coat

Metal and Hard Plastic

  1. Apply a suitable primer and allow to dry
  2. Apply two coats of Sikkens Rubbol Primer with 18 hours between coats
  3. Allow to dry thoroughly before application of a suitable top coat

Sikkens Primer
It’s hard to stir and thick to paint but it covers well. Time will tell if it lasts better that the outdoor wood paint that I used last time. But so far so good.

Really nice paint to use, great coverage. If the preparation is good it is recommended for longevity. I have used the qr code to re order.
