Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish is suitable for a wide range of interior woodworking projects.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surfaces to be treated must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 14% prior to coating.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  2. Remove any remaining residues and degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a clean, lint-free cloth, dampened with methylated spirits, frequently changing the face of the cloth
  3. Allow solvent to fully evaporate before overcoating
  4. Lightly abrade along the grain using a suitable abrasive paper taking care not to damage or scratch the timber surface
  5. Remove any sanding dust
  6. Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin varnish systems
  7. Organic growths must be removed and infected surfaces should be treated with a suitable fungicidal solution
  8. Fillers specifically designed for use with timber such as Sadolin Wood Filler and Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler should be used for making good any minor surface defects, imperfections and open joints
  9. Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

Previously Treated Timber

  1. Remove all defective coatings
  2. All existing finishes should be thoroughly abraded to provide a key for good adhesion
  3. Remaining sound surfaces should be cleaned using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinsed thoroughly with clean water
  4. Then treat as New Timber

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess colour, consistency and compatibility of the final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

Do not apply when air / substrate temperatures are below 8° or above 25°, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from water until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

  1. Apply in full flowing coats, laying off in the direction of the grain, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated
  2. For best results use a good quality, synthetic fibre bristle brush specifically designed for the application of water-borne products
  3. Finish with 3 full coats of Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish, allowing 2 hours drying time between coats
  4. Avoid over brushing as this will cause brush marks and result in a poor quality finish
  5. Carefully de-nib between coats using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicone carbide abrasive paper in the direction of the grain
  6. Do not break through the surface coating
  7. Remove any sanding dust
  8. All subsequent coatings should be applied as soon as possible after the previous coat has fully dried

Cleaning Equipment

Clean brushes and equipment with warm, soapy water and rinse with clean water immediately after use. If spilled, Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish should be removed immediately while still wet, using clean water.

Maintenance

  1. Remove any defective coatings
  2. Organic growths must be removed and infected surfaces should be treated with a suitable fungicidal solution
  3. Remaining sound surfaces should be cleaned using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinsed thoroughly with clean water
  4. Allow to fully dry
  5. Lightly abrade with a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicone carbide or similar abrasive paper in the direction of the grain
  6. Remove any sanding dust
  7. Any bare timber should be patch primed with one coat of Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish
  8. Bring forward with additional coats as required in order to achieve an even, uniform finish
  9. Finish with 1 or 2 coats of Extra Durable Varnish as required

F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

Back
Can I use Sadolin Polyurethane Varnish on floorboards?

We wouldn't recommend this on flooring as it isn't very durable underfoot. Why not call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Can Sadolin Extra durable Poly Varnish be sprayed?

No, this product can't be spray applied. For best results use a good quality, synthetic fibre bristle brush specifically designed for the application of water-based products such as ProDec Premier Synthetic Brush.

Can I use Sadolin Extra Varnish on a painted wall?

This product is ideal for use on interior wood which is bare but may struggle to cling onto painted surfaces. We would instead recommend Smith and Rodger Rocktop Multi-Surface Clearcoat as a great alternative.

Is Sadolin Poly Varnish suitable ss a topcoat for protecting laminate flooring?

Instead consider Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish as this is better suited for flooring. Sadolin Extra Durable Polyurethane Varnish product is not suitable underfoot or on laminates.

Is Sadolin Polyurethane Varnish odourless?

This is a low odour product.

Will this protect tree bark?

Tree bark can be very brittle and difficult to seal/ protect as it often falls away from the timber itself. It is unlikely that any varnish will be strong enough to stop this from happening.

Is Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish suitable for sealing wooden furniture which has been painted with Dulux Once Satinwood?

As this product is designed to be applied to wooden surfaces, it may not adhere well to the paint. We would instead suggest applying Polyvine Decorators Varnish.

I need to varnish over wood coated with linseed oil. Is this varnish water based or solvent based?

The Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish is a water-based varnish, but this will not be suitable for use over linseed oil. You would need to strip the timber back to bare wood before it can be used. Why not call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Can you use Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish on OSB? Looking for a waterproof/protective varnish for OSB laid as flooring.

The OSB will often come pretreated with a film/coating to provide water repellency. Application of a varnish is often the best treatment but due top the nature of OSB, a test test area is crucial.

Please note- The Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish will not waterproof the surface but it will give it a water resistant coating.
