Overview

Overview

Back

Sadolin Decking Oil is a high quality, clear decking oil for both hardwood and softwood decking. It nourishes the wood with natural oils and contains UV light absorbers which offer superior levels of protection against harmful UV rays. Made from linseed oil and alkyd resin dissolved in de-aromatised white spirit.

Please note: This product is replacing the Old Sadolin Decking Oil. The new formula is not fully compatible with the old product. It can be applied as a completely new coat, but is not suitable for touching up previously coated decking oil.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Timber surfaces must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare and New Timber

  1. Lightly sand if necessary or scrub with a non-metallic stiff bristle brush in the direction of the grain to remove any loose particles
  2. Wash surfaces with water and a mild detergent and allow to dry
  3. Remove any green algal growth with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner
  4. If excessive weathering has taken place, any grey denatured timber should be sanded back to a clean sound surface
  5. Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  6. Remove any remaining residues and degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits, frequently changing the face of the cloth
  7. Allow solvent to fully evaporate before over-coating
  8. Fill any gaps or imperfections in the decking boards with Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler
  9. Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin translucent woodcare systems
  10. Special attention should be taken to ensure freshly sawn ends of decking boards are treated with a suitable preservative
  11. Timber in ground contact (e.g. support posts) should be preservative-treated in accordance with the relevant standards
  12. Remove any surface salts left after preservative treatment with clean water and allow to dry
  13. Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

Previously Treated Timber

Sadolin Decking Oil is only suitable for use on bare or previously oiled decking. It is not suitable for use over water-repellent preservative pre-treatments, unless suitably weathered. Previously painted or varnished surfaces need to be sanded back to bare wood and treated as New Timber.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess the colour, consistency and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8°C or above 25°C, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application. Sadolin Decking Oil is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

  1. For best results, always apply to dry timber
  2. Decking boards should be coated all round prior to fixing
  3. Allow 3 days after washing down, or after rainfall, before commencing application
  4. Apply liberally but evenly in the direction of the wood grain by synthetic bristle brush or microfibre roller, ensuring complete saturation of the timber
  5. Avoid over brushing and do not allow puddles to form
  6. Allow 16 hours to fully dry
  7. Subsequent coats may be required depending upon the absorbency of the timber
  8. We advise 2 coats for bare decking and 1 coat for maintenance

Cleaning Equipment

Remove as much of the product as possible from brushes before cleaning with a proprietary brush cleaner.

Maintenance

Due to the high levels of weathering and abrasion that decks are exposed to, it is recommended that 1 or 2 coats of Sadolin Decking Oil are applied once a year, as part of routine maintenance, ensuring the surface is suitably cleaned prior to decorating. On areas which receive high foot traffic this may need to be done more regularly.

Meant to be clear but makes wood much darker and gives a dappled experience
Does not provide an even cover , a mixture of shiny and Matt.

Long lasting product
Slightly more expensive than other decking products but lasts so much longer than others, therefore really a saving in money. Great product and looks after decking very well
