Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that the floor to be treated with Diamond Hard Varnish is clean, dry and free from wax, polish, dirt and other contaminants.

For Unvarnished Floors

  1. Fill any holes or surface imperfections with a suitable wood filler such as Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler or Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Filler
  2. Sand any areas of repair level and smooth with the surrounding wood
  3. Existing coatings such as oils, waxes and stains must be removed by sanding the surface back to clean, bare wood. Do not use an abrasive paper finer than 120 grade for the final sand
  4. Vacuum sanded floorboards thoroughly to remove all traces of sanding dust
  5. Wipe over with white spirit and allow to dry

For Varnished Floors

  1. Lightly sand existing floor varnishes with 120 grade sandpaper to provide a key
  2. Vacuum area to remove all traces of sanding dust
  3. Degrease and allow to dry
  4. Old varnish coatings in poor condition should be completely removed

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply at temperatures below 10°C. Allow for good ventilation. Stir contents of the tin thoroughly before and during application to ensure a consistent finish.

  1. Apply the varnish evenly, using a good quality synthetic brush and finish in the direction of the wood grain
  2. For best results, start in the corner furthest from the door and work along the length of 2 floor boards at a time to avoid overlaps
  3. Avoid over-brushing as this will spread the finish too thinly and affect performance
  4. Apply 3 coats of Diamond Hard Varnish to give the best protection, leaving 2 hours between each coat
  5. Before the final coat, lightly rub down with 240 grade abrasive paper, then wipe over with a damp lint-free cloth and allow to dry

Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish is touch dry within 30 minutes, with a re-coat time of 2 hours.

Regular Cleaning

For everyday cleaning, floors treated with Ronseal Diamond Hard Coloured Floor Varnish can be vacuumed and dry swept with a broom, to remove any surface dirt or grit which might cause scratches to the finish. If the floor surface is stained or marked, a slightly damp (not wet) microfibre cloth or mop may be used.

Deep Cleaning

For more stubborn marks, an appropriate floor cleaning solution may be applied. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container.

Maintenance

To maintain the finish, apply a fresh coat of Diamond Hard Varnish following the Preparation and Application instructions, as and when required.

Repair

To spot repair any scuffs or marks to the finish, simply clean the affected area and apply a fresh layer of varnish to the damaged area(s).

Back
Is the Ronseal Diamond Hard Varnish a polyurethane varnish?

Yes this is a one part polyurethane acrylate varnish which is water-based.

Will it beneficial to do two coats of coloured varnish and then one coat of clear over the top?

The downside to using a coloured varnish is that once scratched or scuffed you lose colour and it makes it more obvious. Using a coat of clear over the top will protect the colour for longer. Take a look at Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish as a suitable topcoat.

I want to use Ronseal Diamond Floor Varnish but have a Light Oak Gloss finish. How do I do this?

As the most popular option, the Diamond Floor Varnish is a satin finish as standard. To achieve a gloss result, apply a coat of Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish after application of your choosen colour.

Easy to apply
I left my old floor with some original colour to match the existing old boards in the landing. The colours matched perfectly and look original. Very easy to apply to old boards. However I used some left over varnish for some pine shelves and this needed more care in applying.

Went on well
I applied 4 coats of Antique Pine to old, sanded pine floorboards. I sanded lightly before applying the 4th coat. The varnish is easy to apply at 15 degrees celsius but I can imagine it could be more tricky at higher temps, due to its fast drying nature. It's important to keep a wet edge and not to let the varnish pool. The colour darkened with each coat, leaving a rich, golden finish. I'm happy with it.

My 44 year old cork tile dining/kitchen area now looks brilliant again after 3 coats of your Ronseal, dark oak Varnish Thank you
Seems excellent for restoring a very faded cork tile floor, which I had not re varnished for over 30 years. At 79 years old(that%u2019s me! ), I never thought I would ever get down to it! only used one third of the tin, so it goes a long way. Your advice service over the phone helped me buy the correct varnish for the job.
