Overview

Overview

Back

Ronseal Decking Stripper completely removes existing decking stains, oils and other decking coatings from wooden garden decking, leaving it ready for re-finishing.

Please Note: This product is for previously treated decking only. It is not suitable for use on new or bare, untreated wooden decking.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ronseal Decking Stripper can be applied to dry or damp wood, but not wet or soaked wood. There must be no standing water on the deck as this will reduce the stripping power.

  • Ensure that any plants and surrounding areas are well protected
  • Sweep decking with a stiff bristled decking brush or broom to remove any loose dirt, leaves and twigs

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess results. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply in temperatures above 25°C or below 10°C. Lower temperatures will reduce effectiveness. Do not apply Decking Stripper in direct sunlight or to a hot surface, otherwise it will dry out too quickly.

Shake tin thoroughly before pouring the stripper into a suitable metal or plastic container. Stir before and during use.

  1. Apply Ronseal Decking Stripper in sections that you can complete within 10 minutes, i.e. 2/3 boards at a time, using a decking brush
  2. If using a brush, use a good sized brush, around 4 inches, to apply a thick layer
  3. Ensure you leave an area free of product to walk on; decking should not be walked on once the stripper has been applied
  4. Keep the surface wet with product while it is working. Do not allow it to dry out during this time, as it will reduce its effectiveness. If the Stripper begins to dry, apply more
  5. After 30 minutes, scrub the surface of a small test area with a stiff bristled decking brush while the stripper is still wet to ensure the coating has been removed effectively. If it is not coming off, leave for a further 30 minutes and re-test
  6. Once the coating has been removed effectively, add a small amount of water to the surface and scrub the treated area to remove any debris
  7. Clean with a pressure washer, paying particular attention to the grooves between decking boards
  8. If a pressure washer is not available, rinse with a hose while scrubbing with a stiff bristled decking brush
  9. Ensure all remaining residues are washed away
  10. For stubborn areas, a 2nd coat may be required - follow the method outlined above
  11. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly (usually takes 2 days) before re-coating with a Ronseal Decking finish

Cleaning Equipment

Remove as much product as possible from brushes before cleaning. Clean brushes with water and detergent. Do not empty into drains or watercourses.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once decking is fully dry, use Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver to prepare the deck and remove any mould or algae that may still be remaining in the grooves.

If decking is looking grey or weathered, treat it with Ronseal Decking Restorer. The decking is then ready for re-finishing with a suitable Decking Stain or Decking Oil.

Really not impressed with this product
Too thick gel like not good coverage and if you have lots of time and energy it may be what works for you.

It works but it is expensive for a low coverage

A note from us...
Like any stripper, how effectively it works can depend on the product you are removing, the age and how many coats. Sometimes a second application is required to get complete removal, or some light sanding.

Good, but took a bit of work!
Used this to take several layers of stain off. Took a bit of work to achieve, but did work which was great. New paint went on well.

Very effective
Relatively easy to apply using a wide brush and very easy to remove using water and a stiff broom. Warning the gel becomes very slippery after it softens old decking stain, particularly when rinsing with garden hose and care should be taken. I found the product coverage rate to be very accurate. Almost all of the old coating was removed (except small patches on sides of planks which are difficult to reach). The decking dries to a bare wood finish, ideal for accepting new stain. I would use this product again.

I will be buying this product in the future

It is a very good product
Provided you take great care and and use a stiff broom, and strong powerful jet of water to wash off the stripper and let dry, this product is great withCuprinol anti slip decking stain
