Overview

Overview

Back

Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish is an ultra hard, high quality interior varnish, ideal for use on hardwood and softwood doors, kitchen worktops and cabinets, bar tops, table tops, counters, bookshelves and wood panelling. It has been formulated for surfaces and areas that require a high level of protection and durability.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, grease, wax, polish and any other surface contaminants.

Bare or New Wood
  1. Fill any gaps or minor imperfections in the wood with a suitable wood filler
  2. Lightly sand bare or new wood to provide a key
  3. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  4. Degrease wooden surfaces with a lint-free cloth dampened with Methylated Spirit if required
Previously Painted Wood
  1. Newly painted wood should first be sanded to provide a key
  2. Heavy Duty Wood Varnish should not be applied over uncured oil-based paint as this may cause discoloration
  3. Older painted wood, where the paint itself may fail, should be stripped using a hot air gun or a suitable paint stripper, then sanded and cleaned prior to coating with varnish
  4. When applied over an emulsion / latex paint, it is possible that the varnish could draw certain stains through the paint which were not otherwise visible. In this case a dedicated stain sealer should be used

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Polyvine Heavy Duty Interior Wood Varnish can be applied by synthetic bristle brush or spray applicator. Rollers are not recommended as stippling may occur.

  1. Ensure the product is well mixed. Do not shake
  2. Thinly apply 2-3 coats of varnish using your chosen method
  3. On porous surfaces dilute the first coat with 10% water
  4. Allow 1-2 hours between coats and 15-60 minutes after the final coat before use
  5. Apply the Dead Flat finish sparingly and brush out well, as over-application could result in misting, especially when applied over darker colours

Please note: Where a 'dead flat' finish is required, Polyvine recommend that surfaces are first treated with 2 coats of satin varnish and then finished with a thin coat of 'dead flat' varnish. Why is this? The 'satin' and 'gloss' varnishes in this range are chemically more durable than the 'matt'. This provides a more durable finish than using 'dead flat' on its own for all coats.

Cleaning Equipment

Application equipment can be cleaned using soap and water before the varnish dries. Wipe any excess off surfaces with a damp, lint-free cloth. Any dried deposits will need a paint stripper to remove them.

Regular Cleaning

Surfaces coated with Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish can be wiped clean with a dampened lint-free cloth or with a dedicated wood cleaner. Never soak wooden surfaces with water or use harsh cleaning chemicals as these can damage or degrade the finish.

F.A.Q.

Back
Can Heavy Duty Interior Varnish be applied with a roller on work surfaces?

Polyvine do not recommend using a roller with this product due to stippling (the creation of a pattern simulating variations of small dots) . They recommend a good quality synthetic brush or spraying instead

Can I use Heavy Duty Interior Varnish on painted (water-based acrylic) kitchen cupboards to offer protection?

We would instead recommend Polyvine Decorators Varnish for this project as this is specifically designed to go over and protect paintwork. This product also has great durability for kitchens.

Can I use Polyvine HD Interior Varnish for laminate kitchen cabinet?

This product can be used on real wood laminates that are bare or freshly painted but it can't be used on plastic or other laminates. Give our Woodcare Experts a call to discuss your options tailored to your needs on 01303 213838.

As Heavy Duty Interior Varnish is waterproof would this be suitable for outdoor use?

The Polyvine Interior Varnish is water resistant rather than waterproof. Interior Varnishes tend to have more durability for knocks and scrapes but aren't necessarily as flexible for exterior use, meaning that they can fail quickly as the timber expands and contacts. Depending on the project, you may wish to consider Polyvine Heavy Duty Extreme Varnish which is designed for interior and exterior use.

Can you paint over this?

You would need to ensure that the surface is fully cured, given a key and cleaned first then you could paint over the surface.

Could Heavy Duty Interior Varnish be used on plywood tealight holders?

We would recommend using Polyvine Heavy Duty Extreme Varnish as this has the highest heat resistance rating from the range of varnishes which we offer.

How long do you have to leave between coats of the Polyvine Interior Varnish?

Allow 1-2 hours between coats and 15-60 minutes after the final coat before light use. After 16 hours, this varnish is fully cured, and normal use can resume.

Will Polyvine HD Interior Varnish darken my wood?

Polyvine Heavy Duty Interior Wood Varnish is non-yellowing and is designed to protect wood from a variety of factors while keeping its natural look. It is likely to very slightly alter in colour as the product goes on and is absorbs to the timber fibres.

Excellent varnish
This water based polyurethane varnish ticks all the boxes for me. Being water based it doesn't fill my workshop with nasty solvents. It goes on easily with a foam roller if slightly thinned. Doesn't add any kind of milkyness to the timber. Adds a slight warmth like a solvent based lacquer. Dries quickly as well. My new go to wood finish.

Easy to use and gives a hard, durable finish to restored furniture
Used the polyvine dead flat finish on a set of drawers which I am restoring. The drawers were sanded down and given a coat of emulsion, the polyvine was used to seal the drawers and give a hard durable finish. Worked well and looked good. Will use again on other furniture.

REALLY good product!!!
This varnish saved my kitchen countertops. After a regular water varnish - 3 layers, after a week there were light spots/discoloration. And the varnish from you, applied in 3 layers, made nothing happen! Water no longer causes discoloration on the wood!!

Excellent product
I'm very pleased with this varnish. It was quick and easy to apply with a paintbrush and dried to the matt finish I wanted. 2 coats gave a perfect finish and a little went a very long way.

Not the result I was hoping for
The finish is indeed matte. I followed the instructions and it leaves white marks on the wood.

Early days but happy so far
Only recently applied this but finish is good with the proper preparation. Seems resillient & I'm confident it'll be hard wearing so happy to recommend.
