Polyvine Exterior Woodstain with its unique polymer system and nano-technology makes it ideal for a wide range of exterior wood care projects. Perfect for softwood and hardwood windows, doors, cladding, fascia boards and more.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Wooden surfaces to be treated must be clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, oils and any other surface contaminants.

New wood should be allowed to dry thoroughly before assembly begins. If the wood is green or has been pressure treated allow to dry before coating (below 18% moisture content).

Fungus, pollen or spores not removed and trapped below the woodstain will discolour the surface of the timber when exposed to moisture.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Fill any gaps or minor imperfections in the wood surface with a suitable exterior wood filler
  2. Sand wood to 80/120 grit for vertical surfaces and 60/80 grit for horizontal surfaces
  3. Remove oils and resins from oily hardwoods and resinous softwoods with methylated spirit on a lint-free-cloth
  4. Wood exposed to moisture should be treated with a mould and mildew cleaner to eradicate any spores in the wood
  5. If the timber is not pressure treated or if contamination is suspected, treat timber with a proprietary wood preservative treatment before staining and one that does not contain wax, oil or silicone
  6. Ensure pre-treatments are completely dry before staining
  7. Joints, end grain and glazing beads must be completely sealed

Previously Painted Wood

  1. Any old coatings must be removed by sanding back to bare wood using 60/80 grit sandpaper
  2. Then treat as 'New Timber' above

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to asses product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Care must be taken when applying in high temperatures or direct sunlight, as this will affect drying time. Do not apply when rain is imminent. The coating life will be reduced on horizontal surfaces and where the coating is in contact with the ground or pooled water.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during use to ensure a consistent finish.
  2. On new wood dilute the first coat with 10% water
  3. Apply evenly following the grain of the wood with a good quality synthetic brush
  4. Maintain a wet edge and avoid overlaps
  5. Apply the first coat
  6. Apply 2 further coats, lightly sanding between coats and allowing 4 hours drying time between each coat

Please note: Oak has an open grain texture and can be problematic with film forming coatings. It is imperative therefore that the grain is filled with coating before further coats are applied. Oak is not as resistant to weathering as oily hardwoods and therefore, needs better protection when used outdoors. The coating integrity cannot be guaranteed on green oak.

For full details, refer to the manufacturer's 'Technical Information Sheet' in the 'Datasheets' section above.

Brilliant finish Quality
This is my 3rd purchase of the polyvine exterior woodstain. I tried just about everything on my decking, after the wasps attack my wood stripping in nearly bare. I gave this ago. It's tuff, it blends in well and best of all I can clean the decking down with a house pipe with no worries of it peeling.
