Overview

Overview

Back

Polyvine Decorators Varnish is a highly durable finish that protects a wide range of surfaces against finger marks, stains, scuffing and colour fading. It is perfect for use on interior wood, fabric, paintwork, wallpaper, plaster, murals and mouldings.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, grease, wax, polish and any other surface contaminants.

Bare or New Wood
  1. Fill any gaps or minor imperfections in the wood with a suitable wood filler
  2. Lightly sand bare or new wood to provide a key
  3. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  4. Degrease wooden surfaces with a lint-free cloth dampened with Methylated Spirit if required
Previously Painted Surfaces
  1. Newly painted wood should first be sanded to provide a key
  2. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
  3. Older painted wood, where the paint itself may fail, should be stripped using a hot air gun or a suitable paint stripper, then sanded and cleaned prior to coating with varnish

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. This product is not suitable for exterior bare timber or vinyl wall covering.

Polyvine Decorators Varnish should not be applied over uncured oil-based paint as this may cause discoloration. When applied over an emulsion / latex paint, it is possible that Decorators Varnish could draw certain stains through the paint which were not otherwise visible. In this case a dedicated stain sealer should be used.

Polyvine Decorators Varnish can be applied by synthetic bristle brush or spray applicator. Rollers are not recommended as stippling may occur.

  1. Ensure the product is well mixed. Do not shake
  2. Thinly apply 2-3 coats of varnish using your chosen method
  3. On porous surfaces dilute the first coat with 10% water
  4. Allow 1-2 hours between coats and 15-60 minutes after the final coat before use
  5. Apply the Dead Flat finish sparingly and brush out well, as over-application could result in misting, especially when applied over darker colours

Please note: Where a 'dead flat' finish with a high degree of protection is required, Polyvine recommend that surfaces are first treated with 2 coats of gloss or satin varnish and then finished with a thin coat of dead flat varnish. This provides a more durable finish than using 'dead flat' on its own. This is only necessary for surfaces that come in to direct contact with people and other surfaces, and that require a tough, durable 'matt' finish. The 'satin' and 'gloss' varnishes in this range are chemically more durable than the 'matt'.

Cleaning Equipment

Application equipment can be cleaned using soap and water before the varnish dries. Wipe any excess off surfaces with a damp, lint-free cloth. Any dried deposits will need a paint stripper to remove them.

Regular Cleaning

Surfaces coated with Polyvine Decorators Varnish can be wiped clean with a dampened lint-free cloth. Never soak wooden surfaces with water or use household detergents or cleaners as these can damage the finish.

What are the dry and cure times of the Polyvine Decorators Varnish?

The Decorators Varnish takes around 35 minutes to be touch dry, it needs around 1-2 hours between coats and should have 60 minutes after the final coat before use. It will be fully cured within 5 days at an average of 20°C.

Do u use a gloss roller to apply Decorators Varnish?

You can apply Polyvine Decorators Varnish using a brush, roller, or spray gun. Make sure that the roller is specifically for use with water-based products. It is important to avoid using a high-pile roller, as it can leave excess material on the surface and can cause stippling (a raised, textured surface) and/ or air bubbles. For a smooth finish with even coverage, use overlapping roller strokes and use a brush to manoeuvre around corners and details.

Will Decorators Varnish go over normal paint, or does it have to be a specific brand?

Polyvine Decorators Varnish is best suited over water-based finishes. Try a test area before completing the project to ensure adhesion.

Can this be used on a laminate kitchen worktop?

We would recommend something with some better resistance when applying to a kitchen worktop. Take a look at Polyvine Heavy Duty Interior Wood Varnish instead.

Can Decorators Varnish be used over handrails and painted risers on stairs?

Yes, newly painted wood should first be sanded to create a key. Older paints where the paint itself has failed should be stripped back to bare wood. Please note, if you are applying this over solvent-based paints, we would recommend a test area first to ensure it can adhere.

Do you have any experience using this on printed patterned wallpaper. Would this make the colours run? My paper is navy with colourful fish all over

Polyvine's Decorators Varnish has been designed specifically for this kind of project. Do a small test area before completing to be certain.

Would Polyvine Decorators Varnish seal vinyl on to a plastic cup to prevent peeling off?

The Decorators Varnish has been tried and tested over vinyl wall coverings but not necessarily something as specific as this. We would suggest a test area to check adhesion.

Can Decorators Varnish be used to seal imitation gold leaf?

We would recommend Imitation Gold/ Silver be protected with Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer.

Would Decorators Varnish protect against water marks on bathroom walls?

Many of our customers use the Polyvine Decorators Varnish for this purpose. Due to the environment, we would recommend protecting your paint or wallpaper using three coats of satin or if a matt sheen is preferred, try two coats of satin followed by one coat of dead flat.

Can I use Decorators Varnish to protect an acrylic laminated house sign?

Try a test area first to test the adhesion. Polyvine Decorators Varnish works well to protect colours and details from fading in the sun with its UV protection.

Can Decorators Varnish be mixed with emulsion paint before use?

By mixing the Decorators Varnish with emulsion, you are essentially diluting the paint down, causing fewer pigments and needing more coats on the surface. We would recommend applying this over emulsion instead.

Is the Decorators Varnish washable, want to use it on kitchen cupboards?

Absolutely, the Decorators Varnish is wipeable. We recommend using a PH balanced cleaning solution to help protect the coating for longer. Take a look at Manns Premier Anti-Bac Cleaner Spray for cleaning kitchen surfaces.

Does Polyvine Decorators Varnish allow the surface to breathe?

The special microporous structure, resists water ingress. The water repellent surface is highly durable. and allows the finished surface to breathe. The minute micro pores repel mould and other airborne contaminants whilst allowing air to pass through, protecting the decor from algae, mildew and fungal attack.

Do you paint Polyvine Varnish on by a normal paint brush?

We recommend using a good quality synthetic brush such as ProDec Premier Synthetic Brush or Purdy Syntox Angled Brush. Unlike natural brushes, those made with synthetic materials will not absorb water and swell, which makes them ideal for working with water-based products.

Can I apply Decortaors Varnish to a lampshade to protect the colour for longer?

Absolutely, the Polyvine Decorators Varnish can be applied to a range of substrates including fabrics to help protect the colour from fading.

Can Polyvine Decorator's Varnish be used on glass plate decoupage projects?

Polyvine Decorator's Varnish serves as an excellent sealing agent and can also replace glue-based decoupage mediums, eliminating an extra step and ensuring a flawless finish. It is ideal for use as an adhesive on paper weights of 35gsm or less, including rice paper and napkins. This makes Decorators Varnish ideal for decoupage projects,

Will Polyvine Decorators Varnish be ok to use on emulsion painted MDF?

The Decorators Varnish is specifically designed for use over emulsion paint. This is best suited for water-based paints. On solvent-based surfaces, these must be fully cured before application of the varnish and a trial test area completed to assess final results.

Does the Decorators Varnish contain latex?

No, this is a water-based acrylic varnish. It does not contain latex.

Not impressed with the packaging or instructions
Product came in a bottle and said not to shake but to mix thoroughly so made it difficult to stir without emptying out into another container. Instructions for application were very inadequate for different types of surfaces . Extremely over priced for what it is .It dries very quickly so wouldn’t recommend using it for large areas

Confusing directions Should be made clearer for each project
I bought this product to be able to use emulsion paint on satin gloss skirting to match the walls. It didn’t work at all. It’s advertised as doing so. On reading the actual label, it suggests you have to carry out another procedure with another of your products first. Confusing! Waste of time, paint and time for me and my project.
