Overview

Overview

Back

Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin is suitable for a wide range of hardwood interior surfaces, including wall and ceiling paneling, wooden flooring, furniture and kitchen worktops. Due to its water-repelling qualities, it is especially well suited for use in wet / moisture-rich environments, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil, wax and resins inside are thoroughly mixed.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Wooden surfaces to be treated with Osmo Wood Wax Finish 1101 must be clean and dry with a moisture content of no more than 20%. Because dense exotic hardwoods tend to be oily in nature, we recommend that surfaces to be oiled are de-greased with methylated spirit and a lint-free cloth prior to application to help with the absorption.

  • Clean or lightly sand old microporous (oiled) finishes
  • Varnishes and other surface coatings must be fully removed back to bare wood before application
  • Small cracks, larger dents and small holes in the wood should be filled with a suitable Osmo wood filler
  • Sand carefully before application starting with a coarse paper - final sanding for flooring and furniture should be with a P120 grit paper
  • Remove all traces of sanding dust with a brush or vacuum cleaner prior to application

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. This product can be brushed, wiped, dipped or spray applied.

  1. Stir Osmo Wood Wax Finish thoroughly before and periodically during application
  2. Apply the 1st coat thinly and evenly along the grain with an Osmo Soft Tip Brush or lint-free cotton cloth
  3. Allow to dry for 30 minutes, then remove any surplus oil with a clean cloth
  4. Allow 12 hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat in the same way as the first
  5. Apply a second coat as above if required

Recommended number of coats: 1 coat for furniture / 2 coats for flooring.

Regular Cleaning

Surfaces treated with Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin should be dry wiped from time to time with a soft, lint-free cloth. To remove day to day, dust, dirt, scuffs and light marks use Osmo Spray Cleaner.

Alternatively, surfaces can be cleaned at regular intervals with Osmo Wash and Care (8016).

Deep Cleaning

For more stubborn marks, light scratches or if the surface is starting to look tired or worn, an application of Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner may be required. For intensive cleaning, without sanding, use Osmo Intensive Cleaner.

Renovation

For renovation of previously oiled surfaces, apply 1 thin coat of Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin to clean, dry surfaces - no sanding required.

I am using 1101 to refinish an iroko countertop. I have applied the oil thinly with a pad after fine sanding. After 2 days the oil is not going off, why?

This is usually down to the oil not being able to penetrate through which can be caused by over application or something blocking the wood grain. Iroko has a tight grain to it, it is likely that the fine sanding has blocked this grain. Ideally, we would not recommend going higher than a 120 /150 grit finish on this type of timber.

To remedy the problem now, you would need to deal with the root cause. It is unlikely that the oil will dry properly as it is sat on the surface rather than in the wood grain. Sand the surface back using a 120-150 grit and wipe the surface with Barrettine Methylated Spirit. Apply a very, very thin coat of oil, keep pulling this out as far as it will possibly go and remove any surplus from the surface using Woodleys Microfiber Cloth The surface should then be left to dry for 12 hours.

Can Osmo Extra Thin go straight onto floorboards?

Absolutely, the Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin 1101 is specifically designed to enhance and protect oily hardwoods with a tight wood grain. Two thin coats is all that is needed after the flooring has been degreased with Barrettine Methylated Spirit.

Was very surprised at how easy it was to use
It was my first experience of restoring/upcycling an old Danish cherry wood table and chairs that had been sun damaged over a 25 year period. Got another company to strip and sand the items first. With friends help the Osmo was applied using a paint brush and then allowed to absorb the wax for 15 minutes before cleaning off the extra with lint free microfibre clothes also bought from this site. Lots of very good advice also available on the site.

Good
It was after I finished painting the oil that I looked to see how to clean the brush and it only mentioned putting in a product by name. I wish someone would have mentioned this when I ordered it. Put a substitute I white spirit on the tin.

Excellent finish, brings out the best in tropical hardwood worktop
Excellent finish, brings out the best in tropical hardwood worktop - looks great. Easy to apply and soaks in well. Much, much better than other worktop oils I've used previously. Worktop is also a regularly used sink surround which gets a real hammering (we wash in the sink - no dishwasher). Its well over 20 years old and after light sanding down with a random orbit sander and 3 coats of the Osmo product applied it looks like new - very impressive. Highly recommended.

Clean durable finish
First time restoring furniture, I was recommended this product and I'm very happy I went with the recommendation. Extremely easy to apply and buff off. This product left a fantastic low sheen, high waterproof finish.

Game Changer!
We have iroko worktops that we have been using Rustins teak oil on for about ten years. I wasn't happy with the finish (sometimes tacky to touch and marked easily) so was looking for something different. I did my tedious research and you suggested this. We watched the videos and followed the instructions to the letter. Wow!! It was so worth it! I am really happy with the result. Wish we had used it years ago.
