Overview

Overview

Back

Osmo Wood Protector (4006) is suitable for any interior wood particularly susceptible to blue stain, including wooden flooring, window frames and wooden panelling in moist environments, such as bathrooms. It is also suitable for exterior wood for which an absolutely ecological, biocide-free impregnation is desired.

Please Note: This product is not recommended for use as a basecoat under products such as Osmo Polyx Oil Raw (3044) or Osmo Top Oil Natural (3068), that are designed to retain the natural, untreated finish of the wood. This product will enhance and darken the wood grain which is the opposite of what the above top coats are designed to do.

Osmo Wood Protector is compatible with all commonly used glues and putties with the exception of products containing Silicone.

Please be advised that the 125ml tins are printed in German only. For application instructions refer to the Application section below.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure the wood surface to be treated is clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 18%).

New Wood

  1. New smooth or freshly sanded wood can be degreased with white spirit if required

Old Wood

  1. Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed
  2. Remove any surface traces of mould, algae or moss with a scraper or stiff brush
  3. Treat areas affected by mould, algae and moss with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner
  4. Clean old microporous (oiled) finishes thoroughly by lightly sanding and wiping down with white spirit
  5. Fill small cracks, larger joints or holes with a suitable Osmo wood filler or alternative wood filler

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before use and periodically during application.

  1. Apply Osmo Wood Protector generously and evenly along the wood grain with an Osmo Soft Tip Brush, Osmo Premium Microfibre Roller or a lint-free cotton cloth
  2. If possible, apply to all sides of the wood including edges and end grain before installation to offer the best all-round protection.
  3. Allow for good ventilation whilst drying

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Osmo Wood Protector is designed as a pre-treatment before the application of an Osmo interior finish or Osmo exterior finish. Any top coat should be applied within one week of using Osmo Wood Protector (4006).

Please note: Water-based stains and other water-based products cannot be used on top of this product.

Back
How long does Wood Protector 4006 take to dry?

Approx. 24 hours when brushed and approx. 36 hours when dipped (under ideal conditions of 23 °C). Lower temperatures and/or higher air humidity can increase the drying time.

Can this be used on the floor and benches in a sauna to stop mould?

This is often recommended for use in a sauna and on a range of other surfaces in high moisture areas, as it is biocide free. This product stops water-ingress and offers the surface an extremely water-resistant protective layer, once correctly overcoated with one of Osmo's topcoat oils. It is free from biocides, meaning there are no active ingredients to stop mould growth but it acts as a protective layer to stop water from penetrating the timber, which if left for a prolonged period of time, can result in mould and fungal growth.

Early days, but seems fine
Seems to do what it says on the tin. Ask me again in 15 years time and I'll let you know.

Good product that does exactly what it says
Good product, applies easily and gives good even coverage, is very water repellent and has done the job that I purchased it for. Despite the price it is one of the few products I found, if not the only one, that did a job that I needed.

Excellent
Have used on bathroom oak window board and bath panel before finishing with Osmo top oil. Gives excellent water repellency well worth using in addition to the top oil.

Very Effective
I use this as a base coat prior to top oil in areas of wooden kitchen worktop subject to high water spillage next to an inset Belfast sink. I did not use it in initial application on new worktops but sanded back and used it on first maintenance. It is now routine for high moisture risk areas.

This is great for kitchen worktops!!
This works so well underneath osmo topoil for kitchen worktops. Makes it so waterproof and the topoil then lasts so much longer.
