Overview

Overview

Back

Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra is ideal for use on all exterior timber, including external doors, window frames, windowsills, carports, timber cladding, balcony, screens & smooth fences, pergolas, summer houses and furniture.

Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra (Natural 429) has been specifically designed to retain the natural, untreated appearance of lighter timbers such as Oak, Pine and Larch. It is not suitable for dark exotic hardwoods, as it may leave a 'milky' or 'white film' appearance to the wood.

The clear version of this product (Clear 420 Extra) can be used as a top coat for Osmo exterior coloured finishes, such as Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain and Osmo Country Colour.

Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and pigments inside are thoroughly mixed.

Please Note: This product is not recommended for use on flat, horizontal surfaces where water can collect, such as exterior floors, decking, wooden steps or flat window sills.

This product is designed for smooth planed or sanded wood such as joinery, some types of smooth fencing and other exterior structures or fixings. Using this product on rough sawn or featherboard wood will significantly reduce it's stated coverage.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that all wood to be treated with Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra is clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%).

New Wood

  1. Surfaces should be sanded with a 120 grit abrasive and no finer
  2. New wood and especially hardwoods should be allowed to weather for approximately 6 weeks prior to oiling
  3. De-grease surfaces with methylated spirit or Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (8000) before oiling
  4. Fill any holes or gaps with a suitable exterior wood filler
  5. Treat the wood with Osmo WR Base Coat (4001) if desired

Please Note: Allowing the wood to weather, especially dense exotic hardwoods, enables the tight, dense grain of the timber to open up. This makes it easier for the oil to penetrate deeper in to the wood grain.

Old Wood

  1. Clean old microporous finishes (wood oils) thoroughly
  2. Areas affected by mould, algae and moss must be cleaned and treated
  3. Old paints, lacquers and varnish like stains must be completely removed
  4. The colour of timber that has turned grey / silver over time can be restored prior to oiling with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel (6609)
  5. Then treat as New Wood

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application
  2. Where possible treat all sides of the timber including edges and ends prior to installation
  3. Apply protection oil thinly along the wood grain with an Osmo Soft Tip Brush or other suitable brush
  4. Work the oil into the surface of the wood grain
  5. Wipe of any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth
  6. Allow to fully dry
  7. Apply a second coat as above

Aftercare

Renovation

When renovation is required, ensure that surfaces are clean and dry.

  1. Lightly sand or use a stiff brush to remove surface dirt and debris
  2. Apply a thin maintenance coat of Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra, taking care to work the oil in to the surface of the wood and wiping off any excess
  3. For wood that has become discoloured or is showing signs of mould, algae or moss, refer to the preparation and application sections above

I work for a joinery that makes and fits bespoke hardwood windows, doors and decking. Can Osmo UV Protection Oil be used on dense exotic hardwoods like Teak, Iroko, Ipe, Meranti and Garapa?

On the tin it states that Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra is not suitable for use on Iroko, Teak and other exotic hardwood timbers. This said however, we have customers that have used Osmo UV Oil with success on these woods.

Wiping the timber down with methylated spirit prior to applying the oil can aid penetration with these wood types. Other things that can help include allowing the wood to weather for 12 weeks and ensuring that the oil is at a good room temperature which keeps it thinner. Cold temperatures thicken the oil making application more difficult.

Can Osmo UV Protection Oil 420 Clear be used on garden decking?

This product is not suitable for use on horizontal surfaces such as decking. Instead consider Osmo Decking Oil.

Can Osmo UV Protection Oil be used on Idigbo?

The UV Protection Oil is not suitable for this species of wood as Idigbo is a very dense, naturally oil enriched wood that has lots of yellow extractives that can leach out of the grain, staining the timber. Instead, you may wish to consider Manns Premier UV Decking Oil

How do I know whether my window frames are suitable for this UV Protection Oil? Part of the frame is a horizontal surface

On horizontal sections, ensure at least a 15 degree angle to facilitate water run-off. Sharp edges must be rounded (radius > 2 mm). Adhering to these factors will ensure that water does not bead on the surface and degrade the UV filters rapidly.

Can you spray apply 420?

We wouldn't recommended this as it contains a biocide treatment which shouldn't be airborne from the chemicals. Also, the product is very thick and trying to thin it will make the product lose a lot of its protection abilities. Brush and roller application will help to massage the oil into the wood which assists the oil penetrate, whereas spraying won't penetrate it well.

Will the UV Protection Oil work for softwood railway sleepers?

This can be applied to most vertical projects but will not be suitable for horizontal areas. Give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss more suitable options.

Can this product be used on shou sugi ban?

The levels of burn with shou sugi ban vary, if it's the tiger effect (not so scorched) we would recommend this product. If it's the alligator effect its likely to brittle to be oiled, we would recommend a varnish to seal it in. Give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

I have ordered 429 Natural but the tin says Osmo UV Woodstain 429. Is this the wrong product?

As a German brand, the language used on the tins can often get lost in translation. All Osmo products arrive with a different wording on the tin but as long as the product code is the same eg, 429 then you can be confident that the formula inside the exactly what you would expect.

Great product does exactly what I needed for my garden gates
Excellent advice and help from the Wood Finishes team as always. I needed help with what had happened to the gates and after all the advice was able to sort them out and apply this Osmo protection oil. They look great now.

Osmo oil is the best
I’ve been using Osmo oil for several years to treat oak framed buildings. It keeps the oak golden coloured and it stops UV bleaching. A great product.

High quality product
Have tried multiple products over the years and finally settled on this product range. Goes on easily, covers well and as a real bonus, seems to do a good job at strengthening rotting or poor quality wood. Be aware that whilst not a criticism, if applied to existing stained wood the product may well be a shade or two darker than expected.

The product was supplied quickly & carefully packed I found it easy use and apply
The natural stain was easy to use and to apply to our new fencing. It looks very smart and the finish has been admired by our neighbours and visitors alike.

Simply the best wood protection ever
I have used this product for years it gives me excellent protection on hardwoods Cedar, Oak if primed and painted on door sills they tend to flake off Osmo doesnt! I purchased Osmo specifically for my drive gates which are made from Iroko also known as Kambala or African Teak. I found the yacht varnish applied by the maker flaked and allowed water to penetrate. The clear Osmo isnt as good as the darker options however I have used a darker stain on one side of the geates which face the sun most of the day this has given me a much better colour match effect, so happy I tried it! if you need a tester Osmo product small samples just ideal I couldnt be happier with the product.

Brilliant
Used osmo oil on my interior oak stairs, recommended by a friend and was brilliant. So when building a new outdoor shed osmo exterior was my go to choice. It's definitely not the cheapest but it works so well it's worth it.
