Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra

Ensure that all wood to be treated with Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra is clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%). After periods of rain, allow the timber to dry for 2-3 days before application.

New Wood

1. Surfaces should be sanded with a 120 grit abrasive and no finer
2. New wood and especially hardwoods should be allowed to weather for approximately 6 weeks prior to oiling
3. De-grease surfaces with methylated spirit or Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (8000) before oiling
4. Fill any holes or gaps with a suitable exterior wood filler
5. Treat the wood with Osmo WR Base Coat (4001) if desired

Please Note: Allowing the wood to weather, especially dense exotic hardwoods, enables the tight, dense grain of the timber to open up. This makes it easier for the oil to penetrate deeper in to the wood grain.

Old Wood

1. Clean old microporous finishes (wood oils) thoroughly
2. Areas affected by mould, algae and moss must be cleaned and treated
3. Old paints, lacquers and varnish like stains must be completely removed
4. The colour of timber that has turned grey / silver over time can be restored prior to oiling with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel (6609)
5. Then treat as New Wood

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and pigments inside are thoroughly mixed.

1. Stir, without shaking, thoroughly before and periodically during application
2. Where possible treat all sides of the timber including edges and ends prior to installation
3. Thinly apply UV protection oil following the grain of the wood
4. Allow to "soak in", then wipe off excess with a clean, lint-free cloth
5. Allow to fully dry
6. Apply a second coat as above

Renovation

When renovation is required, ensure that surfaces are clean and dry.

1. Lightly sand or use a stiff brush to remove surface dirt and debris
2. Apply a thin maintenance coat of Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra, taking care to work the oil in to the surface of the wood and wiping off any excess
3. For wood that has become discoloured or is showing signs of mould, algae or moss, refer to the preparation and application sections above

On the tin it states that Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra is not suitable for use on Iroko, Teak and other exotic hardwood timbers. This said however, we have customers that have used Osmo UV Oil with success on these woods.

Wiping the timber down with methylated spirit prior to applying the oil can aid penetration with these wood types. Other things that can help include allowing the wood to weather for 12 weeks and ensuring that the oil is at a good room temperature which keeps it thinner. Cold temperatures thicken the oil making application more difficult.

This product is not suitable for use on horizontal surfaces such as decking. Instead consider Osmo Decking Oil.

The UV Protection Oil is not suitable for this species of wood as Idigbo is a very dense, naturally oil enriched wood that has lots of yellow extractives that can leach out of the grain, staining the timber. Instead, you may wish to consider Manns Premier UV Decking Oil

On horizontal sections, ensure at least a 15 degree angle to facilitate water run-off. Sharp edges must be rounded (radius > 2 mm). Adhering to these factors will ensure that water does not bead on the surface and degrade the UV filters rapidly.

We wouldn't recommended this as it contains a biocide treatment which shouldn't be airborne from the chemicals. Also, the product is very thick and trying to thin it will make the product lose a lot of its protection abilities. Brush and roller application will help to massage the oil into the wood which assists the oil penetrate, whereas spraying won't penetrate it well.

The levels of burn with shou sugi ban vary, if it's the tiger effect (not so scorched) we would recommend this product. As a German brand, the language used on the tins can often get lost in translation. All Osmo products arrive with a different wording on the tin but as long as the product code is the same eg, 429 then you can be confident that the formula inside the exactly what you would expect.
