Achieve a range of effects with the following Osmo worktop oil products:-

  • Osmo Top Oil Matt (3058) emphasises the wood's grain and natural characteristics, and provides a warm and rich effect without a sheen
  • Osmo Top Oil Satin (3028) is subtle with a noble shimmer which resembles and emphasises the wood grain modestly
  • Osmo Top Oil Natural (3068) Is designed to better retain the natural, untreated look of lighter woods such as Oak, Pine, Larch and Beech. It is not recommended for use on darker exotic hardwoods such as Iroko as it may produce a slightly milky or white film effect on the surface. This is caused by the very small amount of white pigment used in the oil to retain the natural, untreated appearance of lighter coloured timbers
  • Osmo Top Oil Acacia (3061) is a lightly tinted version that adds a brown hue to worktops for an elegant matt finish
  • Osmo Top Oil Graphite (3039) is a lightly tinted version that adds a dark grey hue to worktops for a stylish finish
  • Osmo Top Oil Terra (3038) is a lightly tinted version that adds a dark brown hue to worktops for a rich toned finish
  • Osmo Top Oil White (3037) is a lightly tinted version that adds a white hue to worktops for a brighter, whitewash or Scandinavian type finish

Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and pigments inside are thoroughly mixed.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that real wood kitchen work surfaces and worktops are clear of dirt, debris and other contaminates before applying Osmo Top Oil.

  • New or previously oiled work tops can be lightly sanded back to a 120-150 grit finish
  • To remove existing paint or varnishes, use a suitable paint and varnish remover
  • Fill small cracks, larger joints or holes with Osmo Interior Wood Filler or Osmo Interior Gap Sealer
  • For additional moisture protection, wood can be treated with Osmo Wood Protector (4006) before oiling, if desired, however we do not recommend using a base-coat for the 'White 3037' or 'Natural 3068' top oils as it will change the intended, final finish of these products.

Application

Applying Osmo Top Oil

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Osmo Top Oil is ready to use and does not require thinning. Stir well before use.

  1. Apply the worktop oil thinly along the wood grain using an Osmo Easy Pads, Osmo Soft Tip Brush or clean, lint-free cloth
  2. Work the oil into the surface of the wood grain
  3. Remove any excess surface oil with a clean, lint-free cloth
  4. Allow to dry appropriately with good ventilation
  5. Lightly denib the surface if required taking care to remove all dust that this may create
  6. Apply a thin second coat as above

The grain of the wood is enhanced once this product has been applied and if the final finish is not shiny enough, buffing it with a cloth will create a sheen. Because the natural oils and waxes penetrate deep into the surface they help to keep the wood supple thus preventing it from getting dry and brittle, therefore reducing swelling and shrinkage.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

If a deeper satin finish is required, the oiled surface can be polished with Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner once the surface has fully dried.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Oiled surfaces should not be cleaned with steam cleaners, harsh household detergents or cleaners as they will degrade the finish and its performance.

Regular Cleaning

Kitchen work surfaces and table tops that have been treated with Osmo Top Oil can be cleaned with Osmo Wash And Care and a damp, lint-free cloth, then wiped dry. Alternatively, use Osmo Spray Cleaner (8026)

Deep Cleaning

Stubborn marks and stains can be removed by using Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner, that both cleans and regenerates oiled surfaces.

Renovation

Renovating, even partially, is easy. Just clean and re-treat worn areas with a thin coat of Osmo Top Oil - no sanding, no repair marks and no removal of previous Top Oil finish is required. No repair marks will be visible if applied thinly and appropriately.

Is Osmo Top Oil clear matt the best worktop oil for new, untreated, English Oak kitchen work top surfaces?

Osmo top oil clear matt is ideal for oak kitchen worktops. It is easily applied, very durable, resistant to scratches, scuffs, stains and liquid spillages. Osmo worktop oil is also very easy to maintain and patch repair. If you would like to better retain the natural, untreated look of your oak worktop surfaces, consider Osmo Top Oil Natural. 5ml sample sachets are available for testing.

Is Osmo Top Oil food safe?

Osmo Worktop Oil is made from a blend of natural oils and waxes and is rated as 'food safe'. Once dry, Osmo worktop oil is safe for humans, animals and plants and is ideal for most kitchen worktop surfaces and other wooden food preparation surfaces. The final finish is microporous and will not crack, peel, flake or blister

How long does Osmo Top Oil take to dry?

Osmo TopOil dries in 8 to 10 hours under normal drying conditions. Lower temperatures and/or higher air humidity can increase the drying time. Allow for good ventilation while drying.

What's the best way to apply Osmo Top Oil 3058 to worktops?

We really like the large lint-free cloths like Osmo Easy Pads, or the specialised Osmo Soft Tip Brush to provide a smooth, thin, even and consistent finish on worktops. Apply two coats in the direction of the wood grain, ensuring that no surplus is left to dry on the surface. Woodleys Finishing Pads can be a perfect tool for de-nibbing in-between coats, helping you to acheive the best finish.

What is the best oil for kitchen worktops?

Traditionally, pure linseed oil or tung oil were used for treating hardwood worktops as they penetrate timber more effectively than other natural oils. These oils however can take a long time to dry and often require numerous coats. Maintenance is also required on a more frequent basis than with worktop oils such as Osmo worktop oil which requires just 2 thin coats and will last considerably longer before requiring a maintenance coat.

Is Top Oil suitable for wooden garden table & chairs?

As an interior product, Top Oil will not protect the wood as well outside. We would recommend the Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain - Satin instead for garden Furniture.

Would the Top Oil work without applying the wood protector first?

Yes, it still will offer durability and protection to the timber. The Osmo Wood Protector (4006) will give extra protection on areas exposed to water which may be at risk of degrading quickly.

Will the Top Oil White 3037 look the same as the Polyx Oil Tints in White 3040?

Yes, they work well together when you are trying to match up the looks of different surfaces as they have a similar amount of white pigment with a satin sheen level.

I used Osmo Polyx Oil Raw 3044 on my kitchen counter tops. Can I use Osmo Top Oil to seal and give extra protection after?

Chemically speaking, there is no reason why these two products cannot be used together. Osmo Top Oil would give you far better protection on this type of surface. It can be used on its own and for maintenance coatings in the future moving forward. For now, if the timber has already had two coats of Polyx Oil, it is unlikely that any further oil can be applied as there is no room within the wood grain for it to be able to penetrate and protect. For a similar finish to the Raw 3044 on your kitchen worktops, consider using Osmo Top Oil Natural 3068.

Can Osmo Top Oil be used on softwoods and hardwoods?

This can be used on Softwoods and some hardwoods. Hardwoods with a very dense grain should be treated with the Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin (1101) instead.

My worktops were oiled with a different oil last year, do I need to sand them down before I use this oil?

It would depend on what oil was previously used and how much of it remains in the wood grain. Sanding would certainly avoid any issues with penetration and compatibility. Why not call out Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 for help and advice.

Can Osmo Top Oil be used on a reclaimed timber dining table?

Although designed for worktops, tabletops will also benefit from an application of Osmo top Oil due to its food safety certificate, resistance to heat and liquid spillages. It would depend which timber species you are using for the project, as to whether the oil would be suitable. Please call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to get tailored advice for you upcoming project.

This product is brilliant as are all Osmo products
I have treated all our kitchen worktops, so easy to use and they look great! I have already ordered a second tin to treat a large farmhouse table. We live in France and It goes to our daughter’s address. We shall pick it up on our second visit.

Excellent finish, not the easiest to apply
Pleased with the end result. First coat applied by brush didn’t leave a particularly smooth finish, but the second coat, applied using a cloth, seemed to do the trick ?

Lovely finish - very natural looking
The 125mL tin was enough to do 2 coats on a 2m x 600mm worktop. Finish looks lovely and feels nice and smooth.

White wood oil
I was a little bit under taken by what Osmo said about the product. In reality I was very surprised by how easy it is to use, and the wax did not change the colour of wood. This is a big plus as most do alter the patina but this stayed the same. I would recommend this for sealing and covering wood surfaces.

Ordering was easy. Oil was exactly what was needed so easy to apply & gave a beautiful finish to the oak handrail we’d fitted. I’d buy again without hesitation.

Wasn’t quite right for me in the end
Nice, does what it says on the tin but came out a bit too white for me I thought.

Excellent so far
Easy to use, goes on well, with good coverage. Looks very nice and the surface looks tough and hardweaing. However it has only been on 3 weeks so will have to wait and see how long it goes before it needs a top up.
