Back

Osmo Decking Oil is a premium grade decking treatment that is formulated to protect, enhance, and maintain softwood and hardwood decking boards. Once applied and if desired, it can be over-coated with a single coat of Osmo Anti Slip Decking Oil 430 for additional slip resistance.

*Please Note: Osmo Decking Oil 007 (Clear) does not offer any UV resistance so although the decking will be protected from moisture, cracking, splitting and warping, it will not prevent decked areas from turning grey or silver over time.

Osmo Decking Oil 007 is a dual-purpose product and is sometimes supplied and labelled as 'Teak Oil 007', this is confirmed by the text on the back of the tin. Please be advised that 125ml sample tins are printed in German only.

Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and any colour pigments in the oil are thoroughly mixed before application.

If being applied to soft wood decking then it is recommended to use 50% more due to soft wood being more porous and absorbent and provides a coverage that is 10-12m2.

Osmo Decking Oil can also be used as an effective weather proofing treatment for garden furniture, screens and other exterior wood including pressure impregnated Pine, Douglas Fir, Cedar, Oak or Bangkirai - also suitable for Teak, Eucalyptus and other dense exotic hardwoods as well as thermo treated wood.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Decking boards must be clean, dry, and frost-free prior to oiling.

  • Old paints, varnishes and other coatings must be removed by sanding or stripping back to clean, bare wood
  • Old oil-based treatments or stains need to be lightly sanded or cleaned with Osmo Decking Cleaner (8025)
  • If sanding, use a 120-150 grit sandpaper and remove all traces of sanding dust before oiling
  • For exotic hardwood with a naturally high oil content such as Massaranduba, Bangkirai or Garapa, Osmo recommend that they should be allowed to weather for about 2-3 months (in winter up to 5 months). Alternatively they can be scrubbed with Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (8000) (degreaser) or White Spirit to degrease the surface. Check with the decking supplier for information specific to your type of decking
  • Resinous woods such as Larch or Douglas Fir, should be allowed to weather for at least 6 weeks
  • Old, grey decking can be restored with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel (6609) which will help to remove the greying and restore the woods natural colour prior to oiling
  • For additional protection against blue stain, rot and mildew, pre-treat the deck with Osmo WR Base Coat (4001) or with Osmo Wood Protector (4006) (biocide-free)
  • Ensure than any freshly sawn ends are protected with Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax (5735) prior to oiling

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.

The type and age of timber can have a dramatic impact on how much oil the wood needs. As an example, softwood decking that is old may require more oil than a new hardwood decking that still retains much of its natural oil.

To assess how much oil your decking needs, apply one thin coat, allow to dry, then apply a droplet of oil in a corner. If the droplet of oil soaks into the wood, then a further coat can be applied. Repeat this process until the droplet of oil sits as a bead on the surface of the wood and no longer soaks into the timber. This is an indication that the timber has absorbed as much oil as possible and doesn't require any more.

  • Stir the contents of the tin thoroughly before and periodically during use and especially so with coloured oils
  • Use an application brush or decking applicator to apply the oil thinly and evenly
  • For quick and easy application, we recommend using the Osmo Floor Brush with the Osmo Telescopic Handle. Alternatively, consider the Osmo Decking Brush Set
  • If possible, treat all sides of the decking boards including edges and ends before installation
  • Wipe off any excess oil and allow 10 to 12 hours drying time, then apply a thin second coat
  • If a less intensively coloured result is desired, apply one coat of coloured oil and then a second coat of clear oil, or a coat of clear Osmo Anti Slip Decking Oil (430)

Regular Cleaning

To preserve the look and performance of the oiled finish for longer, it is recommended that decked areas are swept with a stiff broom on a regular basis. This is to remove loose leaves, dirt and other organic matter that can settle on the deck and erode or damage the decking finish.

Deep Cleaning

For deeper cleaning, to remove scuff marks, stains, grease or other contaminants, we recommend the use of Osmo Decking Cleaner in conjunction with the Osmo Decking Cleaning Brush.

Maintenance

If the decking finish starts to look worn or tired over time because of heavy foot traffic or weathering, simply apply a fresh coat of Osmo Decking Oil following the Preparation and Application instructions above.

Back
How much decking will a 750ml tin of Osmo Decking Oil cover?

This depends on the porosity of the wood. As a general rule, Osmo recommend up to 24m² per litre so approx 7.5m² should be enough for a 750ml tin.

Is there a specific time on how long an oiled deck will last before it needs re-oiling?

Unfortunately not. The reason for this is that the elements such as wind, rain and sun all have a degrading effect on the amount of oil in the wood. For that reason, every deck will be different because of location, shelter, weather patterns and general wear and tear.

Is Osmo Decking Oil UV resistant to protect the colour of the decking?

As a general rule, the darker and stronger the colour is, the more UV resistance it provides. This is due to the pigments suspended in the oil blocking more of the UV rays. The clear variation (007) does not provide any UV protection. Decking treated with Osmo Decking Oil 'clear' will therefore be susceptible to the natural grey / silvering of the timber over time.

I ordered a tin of Osmo Clear Decking Oil and received a tin labelled 'Osmo Teak Oil 007' is this correct?

Indeed it is. Osmo sells their Teak Oil 007 as a dual-purpose product as it is perfect for Teak and decking, especially dark exotic hardwood decking which tends to be made from very dense and naturally oily woods.

Do you sell Osmo Decking Oil Grey?

Yes we do. Osmo Decking Oil Grey has a product code of '019' and can be selected by clicking on the 'select colour' drop down filter at the top of this page, next to the image of the tin. The grey version of this product is proving to be very popular as it produces a very clean, modern look to decking.

Can I use this on a outdoor bench or would it come off on our clothes?

The Osmo Decking Oil is a lovely selection for many exterior projects, including your garden furniture.

Does the Osmo Decking Oil have UV filters to protect the decking from going grey?

The UV filters from the oil comes from the added pigments which put a coloured barrier in-between the sun and the timber. As the clear doesn't have any pigments, this does not contain any UV filters and will allow the timber to grey naturally

I need a clear satin oil that does not change the colour of my decking. Which Osmo Decking Oil do i need to use?

All of the Osmo Decking Oil options are coloured, except the clear 007. This has no pigments but will enhance the natural beauty of the wood grain as it penetrates the timber to nourish and protect it. When absorbed, the decking will look like it does when it is wet.

High quality product…
Our balcony looks great with the Osmo Oil, in Garapa colour. High quality product ensure a great result. Balcony wood flooring had not been protected for many years changing to a sad grey and now it looks absolutely lovely again, and it will be oiled every couple of years from now on to keep the golden look at its best.
