Overview

Graphenstone GrafClean Eggshell provides the added durability needed for surfaces exposed to frequent handling, splashes and everyday marks. Its understated eggshell appearance makes it a useful alternative to conventional satin finishes, particularly when a softer look is preferred. For larger decorating projects, it can be paired with Graphenstone GrafClean Matt to create a consistent colour scheme across walls, ceilings and trim while using the most appropriate finish for each surface.

Suitability

Use on interior walls and ceilings in busy areas such as hallways, kitchens and bathrooms. It is also suited to correctly prepared and primed woodwork, joinery and metal, including doors, skirting boards and window frames. For rooms where a flatter finish is preferred and additional resistance is unnecessary, Graphenstone GrafClean Matt offers a lower-sheen alternative.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free from dust, dirt, grease and other contaminants that could affect adhesion. Graphenstone GrafClean Eggshell can be applied to new or previously painted plaster, plasterboard, filled surfaces, prefabricated boards, primed wallpaper and brick, primed wood and MDF provided the surfaces are correctly prepared.

  • Remove any loose, flaking or poorly adhered paint and clean the surface thoroughly.
  • Take extra care when removing paint applied before the 1960s, as it may contain lead. Seek professional advice if you are unsure.
  • Fill cracks, holes and surface imperfections with a suitable filler
  • Allow new plaster and other mineral surfaces to cure for at least 28 days before painting.
  • Lightly sand glossy, satin or particularly smooth surfaces to provide a key, then remove all sanding dust.
  • Apply Graphenstone Ambient Primer L42 to absorbent surfaces. Prime or mist coat plasterboard and spot prime filled or repaired areas where required.
  • Prime wood, metal and other non-porous surfaces with Graphenstone Four2Four
  • Treat any mould or organic growth with a suitable mould remover like Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner then allow the surface to dry completely.

Application

Application

Back

We recommend trialling a test area before starting your project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Apply when the surrounding air and surface temperatures are between 7°C and 35°C and relative humidity is below 80%. Choose a surface away from direct sunlight and allow any sun-warmed areas to cool before painting.

When using more than one container of the same colour, combine and mix them before application to help maintain an even colour across the complete surface.

  • Shake the container before opening, then stir the paint thoroughly before and periodically during application. Avoid excessive mixing as this can introduce air bubbles.
  • Adjust the consistency with clean water where required:
    • Walls and ceilings: Dilute with 10% to 15% clean water.
    • Woodwork and joinery: Dilute with 5% to 10% clean water.
    • Spray application: Dilute with 15% to 20% clean water.
  • Apply 2 or 3 even coats using a brush, medium-pile roller, like the Osmo Premium Roller, Brush and Tray Set or suitable spray equipment.
  • Work methodically in manageable sections, maintaining a wet edge to reduce visible joins and lap marks.
  • When painting walls, cut in and roll one wall at a time. Use the same dilution rate throughout and roll close to the edges to minimise picture framing.
  • Spread the paint evenly and avoid applying overly thick coats, as excess paint may affect curing and cause fine surface cracking.
  • Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours between coats. The paint will be touch dry in around 1 hour and fully dry after approximately 24 hours.
  • Clean brushes, rollers and spray equipment with warm water immediately after use.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Although Graphenstone GrafClean Eggshell is fully dry after approximately 24 hours, it continues to harden for around 30 days. Protect the painted surface from water, condensation and splashes for the first 4 to 5 days, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms. Avoid rubbing, washing or cleaning the finish until it has fully cured.

Regular Cleaning

Once fully cured, wipe away everyday marks with a soft, damp cloth. Use a mild soapy solution for more persistent dirt, taking care to avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and excessive scrubbing.

Repairs

Clean the affected area and lightly sand any damaged or uneven edges. Remove the sanding dust, prime exposed or repaired surfaces where required and apply Graphenstone GrafClean Eggshell in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.
