Overview

Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Matt Paint combines traditional lime paint with photocatalytic technology for projects where breathability and indoor air quality are important. It is particularly suited to homes, workplaces, educational buildings and other frequently occupied spaces. The ultra-matt appearance also makes it a practical option for period properties and contemporary interiors where a flat mineral finish is preferred.

Suitability

Suitable for interior walls and ceilings, as well as exterior walls and masonry. Compatible surfaces include plaster, dry lining, brick, suitable renders and previously painted walls. Absorbent, repaired or non-porous surfaces should be treated with the appropriate primer before painting.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free from dust, dirt, grease and other contaminants that could affect adhesion. Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Matt Paint can be applied to interior walls and ceilings, exterior masonry, plaster, dry lining, brick, compatible renders and previously painted surfaces when correctly prepared.

  • Remove any loose, flaking or poorly adhered paint, then clean the surface thoroughly.
  • Take extra care when removing paint applied before the 1960s, as it may contain lead. Seek professional advice if you are unsure.
  • Fill cracks, holes and surface imperfections with a suitable interior or exterior filler, such as Prestonett Ready Mixed Interior and Exterior Filler. Allow the filler to dry before sanding it smooth.
  • Allow new plaster, render and other mineral surfaces to cure for at least 28 days before painting.
  • Lightly sand glossy, satin or particularly smooth surfaces to provide a key, then remove all sanding dust.
  • Treat mould, algae and other organic growth with a suitable cleaning treatment, then allow the surface to dry completely.
  • Spot-prime plasterboard and filled or repaired areas with Graphenstone NaturColor Interior Matt as a misting coat where required.
  • Apply Graphenstone Ambient Primer L42 to absorbent mineral surfaces.
  • Prime wood, metal and other non-porous surfaces with a compatible multi-surface primer, such as Dulux Multi Surface Primer and Undercoat.

Application

Application

Back

We recommend trialling a test area before starting your project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Matt Paint is alkaline when wet. Wear suitable protective gloves and eye protection during application and avoid contact with the skin and eyes.

Apply when the surrounding air and surface temperatures are between 7°C and 35°C and relative humidity is below 80%. Avoid painting in direct sunlight, on sun-warmed surfaces or when rain is expected.

When using more than one tin of the same colour or tins from different batches, combine and mix them before application to maintain an even colour across the complete surface.

  • Shake the container before opening, then stir thoroughly before and periodically during use. Avoid excessive mixing as this can introduce air bubbles.
  • Mix with 5% to 10% clean water to achieve the recommended application consistency.
  • Apply 2 or 3 thin, even coats using a brush, medium-pile roller or suitable airless spray equipment.
  • Work in manageable sections and maintain a wet edge to reduce visible joins and lap marks.
  • When painting walls, cut in and roll one wall at a time. Use the same dilution rate throughout and roll close to the edges to minimise picture framing.
  • Spread the paint evenly and avoid applying overly thick coats, as this may increase curing times and cause fine surface cracking.
  • Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours between coats. The paint will be touch dry in around 1 hour and fully dry after approximately 24 hours.
  • The finish may initially appear slightly patchy while the lime cures. Allow 3 to 4 days for the full opacity and colour to develop before deciding whether another coat is required.
  • Protect newly painted surfaces from rain, condensation and water for the first 4 to 5 days.
  • Clean brushes, rollers and spray equipment with warm water immediately after use.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Back

Although Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Matt Paint is fully dry after approximately 24 hours, it continues to cure and harden for around 30 days. Protect newly painted surfaces from rain, condensation, splashes and water for the first 4 to 5 days. Avoid rubbing, washing or cleaning the finish until it has fully cured.

Regular Cleaning

Once fully cured, remove everyday marks with a soft, damp cloth. Use a mild soapy solution for more persistent dirt and avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads or excessive scrubbing that could affect the ultra-matt finish.

Exterior Cleaning

Exterior surfaces can be cleaned gently with a soft brush or low-pressure water when required. Treat any mould or algae with a suitable cleaner and allow the surface to dry completely.

Repairs

Clean the damaged area and lightly sand any uneven edges. Remove all sanding dust, prime exposed or repaired surfaces where required and apply Ambient Pro+ in thin, even coats. Allow the repair to cure fully, as the colour and opacity may continue to develop during the first few days.

F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

Back

Here are some of the more commonly asked questions and answers about Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint.

How does Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint help purify the air?

Ambient Pro+ uses photocatalytic technology activated by natural or artificial light. This helps the painted surface break down certain airborne pollutants and odour-causing compounds, including NOx, SOx, formaldehyde and some VOCs.

Does Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint need direct sunlight to work?

No. The photocatalytic process can be activated by natural or artificial light, although the painted surface must receive sufficient light. Areas that remain permanently dark may not provide the same air-purifying effect.

Does Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint absorb CO2?

Yes. The pure lime base absorbs CO2 as it carbonates during the curing process. Most of this absorption takes place within the first 30 days and gradually reduces as the lime finishes curing.

Can Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint be used outside?

Yes. Ambient Pro+ is suitable for correctly prepared interior walls and ceilings, as well as exterior walls, brickwork and compatible renders. It should not be applied to surfaces in permanent contact with water.

Is Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint breathable?

Yes. It achieves Class 1 breathability, allowing moisture vapour to pass through the painted surface. This makes it particularly suitable for mineral backgrounds and buildings where maintaining breathability is important.

Is Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint washable?

Yes. Once fully cured, the paint achieves Class 1 wet-scrub resistance. Everyday marks can be removed with a soft, damp cloth, while abrasive cleaners and scouring pads should be avoided to protect the ultra-matt finish.

How many coats of Graphenstone Ambient Pro+ Air Purifying Paint are required?

Graphenstone recommends applying 2 or 3 thin, even coats. Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours between coats. The paint is touch dry in around 1 hour and fully dry after 24 hours, although its opacity may continue to develop for 3 to 4 days.
