Overview

Overview

Back

Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer is specifically formulated to be used with Weathershield topcoats to provide longer lasting protection for exterior woodwork. Its water-based formulation penetrates the wood to seal and protect against damage from water, decay and blue-staining fungi, and offers great flexibility to help absorb the natural movement of wood.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

To get the best results, ensure surfaces to be painted are sound, clean and dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry) and free from all defective or poorly adhering material such as dirt, grease or wax.

  1. Thoroughly rub down previously painted surfaces, using "wet flatting" methods where possible, then wipe off with a dampened lint-free cloth to remove all traces of sanding dust
  2. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
  3. Remove all loose and defective coatings, if necessary stripping back to bare wood
  4. Remove and treat any mould, algae, lichen or moss with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner
  5. Remove defective glazing material, clean the rebates and any loose or open joints
  6. Replace any rotten wood and troublesome knots with new timber
  7. Apply 1 or 2 coats of an appropriate knotting solution to treat any remaining knots in wood
  8. Any surface defects should be filled with a suitable wood filler

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to test for compatibility and adhesion. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

This product is for brush application only and should not be sprayed. It does not require thinning. Do not use or store in extremes of temperature (or below 10°C), or when there is likely to be rain or fog, and protect from frost.

  1. Shake container thoroughly before use
  2. Pour a sufficient amount of primer into a suitable container
  3. Apply 2 full coats of Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer
  4. For previously painted surfaces, apply only 1 coat
  5. Apply the 2nd coat as soon as the 1st coat has soaked in, usually between 2 - 6 hours (but before the 1st coat has dried)
  6. Allow to dry fully for 16 hours before applying an appropriate Weathershield paint system

Please note: Do not allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat, as this will reduce penetration into the wood and extend the overall drying time.

Solid
Having used this product before, I knew what to expect (and hoped it hadn’t changed over the years). We were not disappointed: still an amazing 3-part solution starting with the dependable & penetrating primer layer.
