Overview

Overview

Back

Dulux Trade Aluminium Primer is a solvent-based primer for interior and exterior wood. Suitable for all types of softwoods and hardwoods, particularly the highly resinous species. It is a versatile primer which can also be used to seal wooden surfaces previously treated with creosote or bitumen, as well as being used as an initial coat for aluminium paints.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be painted are clean, dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry) and free of dirt, grease or wax before treating. Take extra care during surface preparation of pre-1960s painted surfaces as they may contain harmful lead.

Previously Painted or Varnished Wood

  1. Clean off any wax polish, grease or finger marks with white spirit or a dedicated wax and polish remover
  2. Remove all defective or poorly adhering paint or varnish
  3. Rub down thoroughly along the grain of the wood to provide a 'key'
  4. Use 'wet flatting' methods where possible
  5. Wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove all sanding dust
  6. Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate wood filler

New or Bare Wood

  1. Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate wood filler
  2. New or bare surfaces must be rubbed down with a suitable grade of abrasive paper
  3. Remove all traces of sanding dust with a damp, lint-free cloth or vacuum cleaner
  4. If required, clean and de-grease the surface by wiping over with white spirit
  5. Treat any knots in wood with an appropriate knotting solution

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply at temperatures below 5°C. For Health & Safety reasons relating to all solvent-based paints, spray application is not recommended.

  1. Stir the undercoat thoroughly before and periodically during use
  2. Apply 1 to 2 coats of Dulux Trade Aluminium Primer with a good quality synthetic paint brush
  3. If coating resinous woods or surfaces previously treated with creosote or bitumen, apply 2 coats
  4. Allow up to 24 hours between coats and 48 hours if using over old creosote or bitumen
  5. Follow up with 1 or 2 coats of a chosen top coat

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Once fully dry, over-coat the primed surface with a suitable Dulux Trade top coat.
