Overview

Overview

Back

Dulux Multi Surface Primer and Undercoat is suitable for most types of interior and exterior wood, metal and masonry.

Please Note: Specialist primers may be needed for highly resinous woods, new plaster and galvanised steel.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be primed are clean, dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry) and free of dirt, grease or wax before treating.

  • Thoroughly rub down previously painted surfaces, using wet flatting methods where possible, then wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth or vacuum to remove all traces of sanding dust
  • Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
  • Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate filler
  • Treat any knots in wood with an appropriate knotting solution
  • For iron and steel surfaces, ensure all loose scale and rust is removed by thorough scraping and wire brushing
  • Leave new bright galvanised metal to weather and become dull before priming

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Stir the undercoat thoroughly before and periodically during use
  2. Apply 1 single coat of Dulux Multi Surface Primer and Undercoat with a good quality synthetic paint brush or microfibre roller
  3. Or 2 coats if applying to bare wood
  4. Allow 2 hours between coats
  5. Follow up with 1 or 2 coats of a chosen top coat

Aftercare

Back

Once fully dry, primed surfaces can be over-coated with a suitable Dulux top coat

F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

Back
Can Dulux Primer and Undercoat be used on previously glossed wood trim?

This product is designed to be used on bare wood as it needs to be able to bind with the wood fibres. You can simply give the surface a key to remove the shine and apply a fresh coat of paint over the top.

Can you use Dulux Primer and Undercoat on plastered walls as a sealer?

Dulux Primer & Undercoat is primarily intended for wood and metal surfaces, not for plaster. It's generally not suitable as a sealer for newly plastered walls because it's not designed to penetrate and seal porous surfaces like plaster. Instead, for plastered walls, you should use a product specifically formulated for new plaster such as Dulux Trade Supermatt.

An easy to use paint that covers well and dries quickly
This dual primer and undercoat goes on very easily and provides a good Matt finish for top layers of paint. Have used on most of the house. As usual, Wood Finish Direct delivered very quickly and are competitively priced.
