Overview

Back

Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil is a water-based decking treatment for use on all exterior hardwood and softwood decking boards. This product was formally branded as 'Cuprinol Decking Oil and Protector'.

Please note: Cuprinol brand the clear version of this product 'Natural'. The clear or 'natural' version of this product contains a small amount of added, non colour specific pigment to provide the UV protection.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure the wooden decking is clean, dry, and free from any dirt or loose debris prior to oiling.

New Decking Preparation

For all bare wood decking including tanalised, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers.

New Softwood Decking

  1. Sweep decking with a stiff brush or broom to remove all surface contaminates such as dirt, grit, and organic matter
  2. Use Cuprinol Decking Cleaner to thoroughly clean the deck and remove any mould or algae
  3. For best protection, treat decking with a wax-free wood preserver prior to applying Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil
  4. If possible, preserve all sides including edges end grain prior to installation

New Hardwood Decking

Hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow the surface grain to open, which allows for better absorption of the decking oil. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should weather before treating.

Old Decking Preparation

Old coating type finishes such as decking paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before oiling. Depending on the condition and type of finish, it may require more than one attempt to fully remove the old coating.

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes have been fully removed to expose bare wood
  2. Sweep the decking with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris before oiling
  3. Any holes, gaps or splits in the decking boards can be filled with Cuprinol All Purpose Wood Filler or Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler
  4. For the best protection, treat with a suitable exterior wood preservative prior to application of Cuprinol UV Decking Oil
  5. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess product performance and results. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Brush Application

Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.

  1. Apply the oil evenly along the grain, using a suitable brush
  2. Do not allow puddles to form and wipe off any excess oil with a clean, lint-free cloth
  3. Allow to dry for 4-6 hours
  4. Apply a second coat as above

Spray Application

Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil can be spray applied using Cuprinol Spray and Brush or other compatible garden pump sprayer. Refer to the sprayer user guide for full instructions.

Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C, in damp conditions or if rain is due before the product has dried. Cover any surfaces nearby to protect from over-spray. Any over-spray should be cleaned up immediately (whilst still wet) with water and household detergent.

  1. Spray with the nozzle 15-30cm (6"-12") from the wood surface
  2. Spray at a consistent rate to maintain colour depth
  3. Take care to avoid over application, removing any excess oil with a clean, lint-free cloth

Regular Cleaning

Decked areas can be cleaned at regular intervals using Cuprinol Decking Cleaner.

Maintenance

To maintain the surface finish and its protective properties, re-apply a fresh coat of Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil as required, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.

How hard wearing is it? What if I mixed in a little water-based varnish to make it a little more hard wearing?

Unfortunately, you would not be able to mix an oil with a varnish. If you are looking for a more durable product, try Manns Premier UV Decking Oil

Would the UV Guard be OK for sleepers? I have a step over wall and this year it needs to be treated.

Yes, this would be ideal for sleepers as long as it is not painted or varnished

Can i use this on a new untreated wooden garden bridge?

We would first recommend using a preserver such as Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear to protect the timber against all the nasties of the outdoor environment. The UV Guard Decking Oil can then be applied afterwards to seal this in and protect the timber.

I have just painted my decking in grey. I want to seal it n to stop it from flaking, would UV Guard be suitable, or can you recommend what would be?

This wouldn't be a suitable product to go over a painted decking as it will not be able to penetrate through the paints film, creating a rather sticky surface! A good quality decking paint doesn't usually require a topcoat to seal it in. You must be careful not to layer the products up too much as each will create a thick film, making it susceptible to peeling and flaking.

Really does the job
Goes on easily when it goes on its lighter than the tin shows but when dry it's as the tin shows. When it rains you can see the difference between this product and normal decking paint as you can see the rain sitting on the decking and not soaking in.would recommend.
