Overview

Overview

Back

Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback is a water-based, non-drip wood treatment, for garden sheds, fences, and other rough sawn timbers. Enriched with wax for a water-repellent finish that forces moisture to run off the surface like a duck's back.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, loose debris, and any other surface contaminants. It is important that any wood preservative used beforehand does not contain wax, oil or silicon as these will reduce the ability for Cuprinol ducksback to adhere to the wood and reduce performance.

Bare or New Timber

  1. Brush wooden surfaces with a stiff brush or broom to remove surface dirt, debris, mould, algae, and moss
  2. Areas affected by mould, mildew, algae, and fungi should first be treated with a suitable garden cleaner
  3. All rotten timber must be cut out and replaced
  4. If the wood surface is looking worn or has greyed from sun damage and the effects of weathering, Cuprinol Garden Furniture Restorer can be used to revive the wood before coating
  5. Any holes, gaps or splits in the surface of the wood can be filled with Cuprinol All Purpose Wood Filler or Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler
  6. Bare or untreated garden wood can be pre-treated with Cuprinol Wood Preserver prior to painting if additional protection is required against insect attack, rot and decay.

Previously Coated Timber

  • Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback cannot be used over paints, varnishes or any surface coating / sealant.
  • Any existing surface coatings such as these should be fully removed back to clean, bare wood, by sanding or using a suitable paint and varnish stripper

Application

Application

Back
  1. Applying 2 coats of Cuprinol Ducksback will be suitable to give a consistent matt, opaque finish on rough wood
  2. Work evenly along the wood grain, avoiding overlaps
  3. We recommend 2 hours between coats under normal drying conditions, however a simple touch test to see if it has dried will tell you if you need to leave it a little longer
  4. Where a strong colour change is involved, more coats may be required
  5. Recoat within 2-3 days of previous coat. If a longer period elapses try a test area to ensure product is not repelled

Always do a test area before starting any project to test adhesion and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C, in damp conditions or if rain is likely before the product has dried. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application.

Maintenance

To restore the colour and water repellent qualities Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback, simply brush the surface with a stiff broom or brush to remove any dirt and debris, then re-apply a fresh maintenance coat following the Preparation and Application instructions above.

Can I use Cuprinol 5 year ducksback over other wood treatments?

It depends on the type of wood treatment previously used. If it's something like a wood preserver, or oil-based product that penetrates in to the surface of the timber, as long as the previous treatment was applied at least a year ago, Cuprinol Ducksback should be fine. We always recommend, however, that a small test area is done before starting any project to test adhesion and final finish. This product cannot be used on surfaces that are sealed with a wood paint or varnish.

If treating a garden shed or fence that has been previously coloured or stained with a pigmented wood preserver or other penetrative wood treatment, its worth noting that the old colour could influence the final colour of the Ducksback weatherproof treatment. Always do a test area first.

Can I use Cuprinol fence paint on wooden garden furniture?

This product has been specifically formulated to colour and protect wooden garden sheds and fences. To colour and protect garden furniture, we recommend Cuprinol Garden Shades. This said, we have heard of people using ducksback paint on garden furniture.

I've used Cuprinol Ducksback fence paint before but have had to replace 2 fence panels due to wind damage. If I paint the new panels with ducksback paint, will the colour match the older panels in the same colour?

The age, condition, and type of wood will all have an influence on the final finish and colour of any wood finishing product. It is unlikely that the new panels will blend in seamlessly with the old initially but as time passes and all the fence panels weather, when the time comes to re-treat all the panels, any colour difference should be less noticeable.

Can I use it for children's play equipment?

Its suitable for rough sawn or sanded timber, We would not recommend it as it's likely to rub off on clothing.

Can I use Ducks back on my shed floor?

We wouldn't recommend this underfoot as it is not durable enough to cope with foot traffic. It wouldn't last very long at all.

What is darker Autumn Brown or Forest Oak?

Forest Oak is significantly darker than Autumn Brown.

Would this work on a wooden hot tub with an old oil-based paint already on it?

Cuprinol Ducksback can only be applied to bare wood as it needs to bind to the wood fibres.

Is it a solid stain or transparent? I assume is the latter as oil-based? We need to cover a darker colour.

This is a water-based opaque wood stain that can only be applied to bare wood, wood that has been treated with a wax-free preservative or timber that has been previously coated with Ducksback

I am going to use this for my decking would this work better than recoating every year with an oil?

This product is not durable enough to be used under foot. Instead for a similar level of colour, consider Cuprinol Anti-Slip Decking Stain. which will offer much better protection. You would still expect a maintenance system to be in place around about every 12-18 months or so, depending on the traffic and weather that the decking gets.

Can Ducksback be painted on top of an existing green water-based coat of paint?

Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback cannot be used over paints, varnishes or any surface coating / sealant. Previous coatings should be fully removed back to clean, bare wood, by sanding or using a suitable paint or varnish remover.

Good Shed and fence paint
Thick paint so covers well. Colour Red Cedar was lighter than I thought. It remains to be seen whether it darkens with weathering.
