Preparation

Preparation

Back

To achieve the best results the surface needs to be clean, structurally stable and free of dirt, dust and surface impurities

  • Remove any old, substandard and defective paint by either using a paint scraper, paint stripper or sanding down the project area
  • Extra caution should be taken if removing pre 1960s paint as this could contain hazardous levels of lead
  • If the project area shows signs of grease or oil, then wash with a suitable detergent and allow to dry thoroughly
  • Repair any defects such as cracks or holes with a suitable filler to produce a surface free of imperfections
  • If necessary, sand the project area to produce a flat smooth surface
  • When applying to new plaster pre-mist the project area or seal the plaster with an appropriate plaster sealer
  • If using two or more tins from different batches, then blend the paint together to ensure a consistent hue and tone of colour
  • Apply your chosen base colour, such as Craig and Rose 1829 Chalky Emulsion Paint ensuring that the steps needed for applying this paint are followed
  • Once the base coat has been applied, give sufficient drying time with a minimum of 7 days before applying Craig And Rose Artisan Chalk Wash Effect to give the basecoat sufficient time to fully cure and harden

For further instructions on how to apply the basecoat please visit: Craig and Rose 1829 Chalky Emulsion Paint

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess the suitability of the product and the finish.

Use only in well ventilated areas with a room temperature that will exceed 10ºC during the drying period.

  • With starting in the top left hand corner apply Craig And Rose Artisan Chalk Wash Effect using a wide brush, 50-75mm (2-3 inches), in a random pattern
  • It is important to guarantee that a coverage is achieved and that no areas are left uncovered
  • Once the application process has been started it is important to continue until the entire area is covered, without pausing or stopping
  • Apply in 1 metre areas and whilst Craig And Rose Artisan Chalk Wash Effect is still damp, use either a muslin cloth or sponge to create the desired pattern effect
  • If a muslin cloth is used then regularly re-scrunch the cloth to change and alter the shape
  • Ideally, the application can be performed by 2 people, with one person applying Craig And Rose Artisan Chalk Wash Effect followed closely the the second person with the muslin rag or sponge
  • Only one need to be applied and avoid going over completed work for a second time
