Overview

Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat is applied over the specified Bollom intumescent basecoat to complete the system in your chosen colour.

When applied over correctly prepared Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat, the wood coating system achieves Class B-s1, d0 to BS EN 13501-1:2018. This classification describes the system's reaction to fire:

  • B indicates a limited contribution to fire.
  • s1 indicates low smoke production during testing.
  • d0 indicates no flaming droplets or particles during the specified test period.

The classification applies to the complete tested system, with the specified preparation, coating thicknesses and application requirements followed. Available in BS, RAL and NCS colours, the topcoat allows you to complete the system in a finish that suits your colour scheme.

Suitability

It is suitable for interior wood coated with Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat and steel coated with Bollom Brosteel Ultra 60.

Choose the compatible wood basecoat or explore an alternative finish below.

Product Use
Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat An intumescent basecoat for bare and previously painted interior wood, finished with a compatible Flameguard Ultra topcoat.
Bollom Flameguard Ultra Vinyl Matt Topcoat A water-based decorative topcoat for compatible Bollom fire protection systems, providing a vinyl matt finish.
Bollom Flameguard Ultra Gloss Topcoat A solvent-based decorative topcoat for compatible Bollom fire protection systems, providing a gloss finish.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Before applying Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat, prepare the underlying surface and coat it with the appropriate Bollom intumescent basecoat. Any contamination, loose paint or surface defects should be dealt with before the basecoat is applied.

Paint applied before the 1960s may contain lead. Take appropriate precautions during preparation, avoiding dust and following guidance for safe removal and disposal.

Preparing Interior Wood

The Broflame Ultra system requires timber at least 9mm thick. Previously painted wood may retain a maximum of four coats of conventional decorative paint, provided these are sound and firmly bonded to the timber.

  1. Clean the timber with a suitable detergent to remove dirt and grease. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any detergent residues and allow the surface to dry fully.
  2. Remove failing paint and feather the edges of the remaining sound coating. Strip existing paint completely if its adhesion or compatibility is uncertain with a suitable Paint and Varnish Remover.
  3. Repair small holes, cracks and shallow defects with a Filler confirmed as suitable for the Bollom system. Allow repairs to dry, sand them level and remove the dust.
  4. Treat knots before coating, following Bollom's recommendations.
  5. Wet abrade sound gloss or eggshell paint to provide a key. Rinse away the residues with clean water and allow the timber to dry.
  6. Apply Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat following its instructions and specified coverage rates.

Leave the final basecoat to dry for at least 24 hours at 20°C before overcoating. Check that it is evenly applied and fully dry before applying the eggshell finish.

Preparing Structural Steel

For structural steel, follow Bollom's specification for preparation, priming and the required intumescent basecoat. Ensure the basecoat is evenly applied and fully dry before applying the topcoat.

Please note: Filling and sanding should be completed before applying the intumescent basecoat. If an applied basecoat is damaged or requires repair, seek Bollom's advice to ensure the specified coating thickness is maintained. The current topcoat TDS specifies interior use over Broflame Ultra Basecoat on wood and Brosteel Ultra 60 on steel.

Application

Application

Back

Always apply to a small test area before starting the project to check compatibility, colour and finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin and the specification for the complete Bollom fire protection system.

Ensure the specified intumescent basecoat is evenly applied and fully dry before applying Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat. During application and drying, maintain air and surface temperatures between 5°C and 30°C, with relative humidity below 75%.

  1. Stir the paint thoroughly before use to ensure an even consistency.
  2. Apply Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat by brush or roller. Use the product as supplied and do not thin.
  3. Apply at the specified coverage rate of 12m² per litre per coat. Observe this rate as part of the specified fire protection system.
  4. One coat is normally sufficient over Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat or Bollom Brosteel Ultra 60. A second coat may be required when covering dark or contrasting colours.
  5. Where a second coat is required, allow at least 4 hours drying time at 20°C before recoating. Drying times may be longer in cooler conditions.

After use, remove as much paint as possible from brushes and rollers before cleaning them with warm water. Do not flush paint or contaminated cleaning water down drains or into watercourses.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Complete the project with an even coat of Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat over the specified, fully dry Bollom intumescent basecoat. This provides the decorative eggshell finish as part of the complete fire protection system.

One coat is normally sufficient, although a second may be needed when covering dark or contrasting colours. Follow the coverage rates and drying times in the Application section above, and allow the final coat to dry before handling the painted surface.

How do I get a fire certificate?

Keep your proof of purchase, product batch numbers and site details, then submit this information through Bollom's website to request a Certificate of Supply. For assistance, contact Bollom's Customer Services on 0191 410 6611. Bollom states that the certificate will be sent within five working days.

Can I use Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat on its own?

No. The current specification requires application over Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat on interior wood or Bollom Brosteel Ultra 60 on structural steel. The topcoat provides the decorative eggshell finish as part of the specified fire protection system.

What fire classification does the eggshell system achieve on wood?

When applied over correctly prepared Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat in accordance with the system specification, it achieves Class B-s1, d0 to BS EN 13501-1:2018. This indicates limited contribution to fire, low smoke production and no flaming droplets or particles during the specified test period. The classification applies to the complete tested system, rather than the topcoat alone.

Can the system be applied over existing paint on wood?

Yes, subject to the Broflame Ultra Basecoat requirements. Timber must be at least 9mm thick, and existing paint must consist of no more than four coats of a sound, conventional decorative finish with excellent adhesion to the timber. Remove unsuitable or poorly adhering coatings before applying the system.

How many coats of Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat are needed?

One coat is normally sufficient over the specified Bollom basecoat, although a second coat may be required when covering dark or contrasting colours. Apply at 12m² per litre per coat and follow the specified system requirements.

How long should I wait before applying the topcoat or a second coat?

Allow Bollom Broflame Ultra Basecoat to dry for at least 24 hours at 20°C after its final coat before applying the eggshell topcoat. For Brosteel Ultra 60, follow its specified drying requirements. Where a second eggshell coat is needed, allow at least 4 hours at 20°C between coats. The basecoat must be fully dry before overcoating.

Can Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat be sprayed or thinned?

The current TDS specifies application by brush or roller. Use the paint as supplied and do not thin it.

Is Bollom Flameguard Ultra Acrylic Eggshell Topcoat suitable for exterior use?

No. It is specified for interior use only. During application and drying, air and surface temperatures must remain between 5°C and 30°C, with relative humidity below 75%.

Can I paint over the finished system with ordinary decorative paint?

Do not assume that an additional decorative coating will preserve the tested fire performance. Contact Bollom before repainting or changing the finish so that any maintenance work remains compatible with the specified system.
