Back

BEDEC Barn Paint was originally formulated for the restoration of barns, but with its versatility and tough, protective coating offering excellent resistance against rain and severe weather, it is also ideally suited for use on houses, gardens, fences, cladding, farm equipment and much more.

The water-based coating offers good flexibility which avoids any cracking or flaking and boasts excellent colour retention. It can be applied over previously painted surface, including those coated with weathered bitumen, tar or creosote.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

To get the best results, ensure surfaces to be painted are sound, clean, dry and free from all defective or poorly adhering material, dirt, grease and chalky residue. Sand all edges of remaining coating until smooth.

  • Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
  • Lightly abrade all surfaces to remove any grey, weathered wood and surface sheen from remaining coatings, and to open up the grain on new wood
  • Remove any biological growth such as mould and algae with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner
  • If applying to bare timber stain blocking primer should be applied prior to application to prevent any possible resin bleed staining the coating
  • Pressure treated wood should be weathered for at least 6 months prior to coating
  • Newly coated creosote surfaces should be weathered for at least 3 months prior to coating
  • Ensure bare steel is free from rust, dust and scale, and treated with a suitable primer prior to paint application
  • New galvanised steel should be weathered for at least 2 months and doesn't need to be etched or pre-primed

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Do not apply at temperatures below 8° or when rain is likely. Do not use or store in extremes of temperature and protect from frost.

When applying to new wood, untreated weathered wood, brickwork, cement, render, plaster or any porous substrate, the first coat should be thinned using 30% clean water.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during use
  2. Apply evenly and consistently, using a good quality synthetic bristle brush, microfibre roller, conventional H.V.L.P or airless spray gun
  3. It is recommended to apply 2 - 3 coats
  4. Allow to fully dry for 4 hours between coats
  5. Fully dry in 2 - 4 hours
  6. Do not apply to wet, damp or frozen surfaces

Cleaning Equipment

Clean brushes, rollers and any spillages immediately after use, using warm soapy water.

Do I need a primer before applying Bedec Barn Paint to my shed?

Bedec Barn Paint is self-priming and undercoating on this type of surface. On new bare wood we recommend that the first coat be diluted with 30% water. If the timber has lots of resinous knots a knot block primer such as Bedec All Prime should be applied first.

I am applying Barn Paint to a corrugated iron roof which is well weathered. Does this need a primer?

As this can be a tricky substrate, we would recommend using a primer such as Bedec All Prime.

Bedec Barn Paint - the most fantastic paint for exterior wood work
Applies so easily and smoothly, excellent coverage, dries quickly, and paint brushes clean so easily in warm water.

The best outdoor paint I've ever used
Great coverage, nondrip, easy application, quick drying. What's not to like? The higher than average cost is not significant when you consider the quality of the job.

Great product in all colours
This is a brilliant product, I painted my bungalow walls with white semi gloss. It's great coverage on surface and allows the porus coating on the walls to breath. I also painted all the plinths black. I then painted my garden shed with the black semi gloss. Looks amazing. The service from Wood Finishes Direct has been first class.

Very easy to return
This is an excellent paint, but I ordered the wrong colour by mistake. Very easy to return. Small charge as set out in their terms, so no issue with this, especially as my mistake. Quick refund

Underrated paint
I’ve used different colours and variations this paint on various external applications over the years and it’s never disappointed. I’ve used it on timber, masonary, render, slate, metalwork(galvd and rusted) and it’s yet to let me down. Bedec’s Extraflex also needs a mention… this stuff is excellent.
