Overview

Overview

Back

Barrettine Teak Oil is natural oil ideal for retaining the natural beauty of hardwood garden furniture, such as Teak. Perfect for feeding, nourishing and reviving the look of the wood, reducing the effects of weathering.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Areas to be treated should be clean, dry and free from traces of dust, dirt, grease, wax and silicone.

Exterior Wood

Bare or Untreated Wood

  1. Clean the wood to be oiled with a stiff broom or brush to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris
  2. For areas affected by mould, algae or moss, use Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner
  3. Treat with a suitable exterior wood preservative for the best protection
  4. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation
  5. Wipe down new wood with Meths such as Barrettine Methylated Spirits and allow to dry

Previously Finished Wood

Old coating type finishes such as paints, varnishes and varnish-type stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before oiling. Depending on the condition and type of finish, it may require more than one attempt to fully remove the old coating.

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes have been fully removed to expose bare wood by either jet washing or using a dedicated paint stripper / remover
  2. Old oiled finishes should be lightly sanded or cleaned thoroughly with white spirit

Once the old finish has been completely removed / cleaned, refer to the preparation instructions for bare or untreated wood above.

Interior Wood

  1. Existing oiled surfaces can be lightly cleaned if required with a dedicated wood cleaner
  2. Pre-existing varnishes and sealers must be completely removed via sanding or using a suitable product stripper / remover
  3. Use an appropriate wood filler if repairs are required before oiling

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Apply Barrettine Teak Oil thinly and evenly with a soft, lint-free cloth or a natural bristle brush
  2. Work the oil into the wood, finishing off in the direction of the wood grain
  3. Remove any excess oil from the surface of the wood after 15 minutes
  4. Allow to dry for 24 hours between coats
  5. Apply additional coats as required, using the same method described above

Please Note: Barrettine state that Teak Oil is not recommended for use on Oak. This said, however, many of our customers have used Teak Oil on Oak and have been happy with the results.

Maintenance

Additional coats of Barrettine Teak Oil can be applied as and when the finish starts to look tired, worn or if it begins to lose its water resistance. Simply clean the surface first to remove any traces of dust and dirt, then apply a fresh coat of Teak Oil as per the Application instructions above.

Can Barrettine Teak Oil be used on Scandinavian redwood garden furniture?

Redwood is a softwood; Teak Oil is a thin type of oil specifically designed for hardwoods density. I would instead consider Cuprinol Ultimate Furniture Oil which has added UV filters

Does Teak Oil remove stains on dining table?

Teak oil will enhance the natural beauty of the grain as it penetrates the timber and nourishes it. It will not remove stains. Why not call our Woodcare Experts on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Easy to apply Have used Barratines products before - they are the best
I used foam brushes that I bought for Teak Oil which worked very well with this product. I expect brushes will work fine too. Product goes a long way so I have enough for many more coats! I've put 2 coats on so far onto a large garden table. Bought a 5L tin and I'll get another 8 coats out of it I expect for future years.

Good value, size I needed
I was glad to find a 2l size which suited my requirements as only the 500ml and 5l seem to be on offer from other retailers. easy to use. seems to do the job. I prepped my old garden furniture thoroghly by scrubbing and cleaning before applying several coats of this oil. so got a better finish
