Overview

Overview

Back

Barrettine Black Bitumen Paint can be used as a protection coat on numerous materials including metals, concrete, cement and wood. It can also be used as a priming coat or sealant on rough, porous or friable surfaces.

As an alternative to this product, for rough wood surfaces, consider Barrettine Creosolve.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess performance and compatibility, and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Surfaces to be coated with Barrettine Bitumen Paint must be free from surface contaminates such as dirt, debris, rust or scale. Oil and grease should be removed by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with Barrettine White Spirit.

If required, a coat of anti-corrosive primer can be used on metal surfaces prior to applying Barrettine Black Bitumen Paint.

Application

Application

Back

Do not apply black bitumen over tar-based products or normal pigmented paints, or surfaces that can rise above 65°. Stir the contents of the tin thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure consistent coverage and finish.

  1. Apply Barrettine Black Bitumen Paint by natural bristle brush, microfibre roller or spray*, taking care to coat all recesses and edges thoroughly
  2. 2 coats are recommended, however in severe conditions apply 3 coats for maximum protection

*When being sprayed, it is recommended that bitumen paint is thinned with white spirit for ease of application. This will require more coats than normal.

The best I have found
Black Bitumen paint can be unpleasant stuff to work with but Barretine's is no trouble at all. It gives a beautiful shiny finish which, as is natural with the product, gradually becomes duller. The important things is that it gives good protection.

Easy to apply, great finish
Used to coat timber boards at the base of my new garden studio which is raised on steel posts. Paint went on treated timber very easily. Two coats applied. Shiny smooth finish. Too early to tell how durable the bitumen paint will be but looks great now.
