Spray Wax is exactly what the name suggests, a wax that is applied by spraying furniture or wood surfaces with a wax spray gun system. Our spraying wax is toluene free and made from a combination of the finest quality Bees Wax, Carnuba and Candelilia Waxes. With a similar consistency to that of a soft margarine, the spray wax contains a special ingredient that transforms it to a liquid state when stirred. The quickest and easiest method of stiring the wax is with a mixer that can be attached to a standard electric drill, these attachments are inexpensive at around £10.00, mixer attachments are available from stock.

Spray systems

Specialist wax spray systems that produce quality spray finishes for furniture and wood vary in cost from as little as £139.00 for a HVLP system (high volume, low pressure) system to £1,000 for a machine suitable for a small business and £2,400+ VAT for a top of the range spray wax system. For normal daily use, we highly recommend the Apollo 700 wax spray system which costs £384.00+VAT. All of the spray systems detailed above including the Apollo 700 system are available from our store as a special order (call us on 0844 815 4884).

Maintaining your wood finish

To preserve and protect your furniture and wooden surfaces, It's recommended that furniture spray finishes are re-waxed every 6-12 months although this is not essential. There is no limit to the number of coats that can be applied but each additional coat of wax will offer an improved patina, pigmented waxes can be used to give greater depth and durability to the wood or furniture. Once the Spray Wax has been dried and polished, further coats of wax can be applied with a paint brush if necessary to give a better shine and patina.

Storing Spray wax

At with most of our wax products, the best way to prolong the life and properties of the wax is to store them in temperatures above 8 degrees C and below 22 degrees C. Spraying Wax will keep in an airtight container for at least 2 years and in some instances under the correct conditions, much longer. If exposed to very cold or hot temperatures, the consistency and properties of the wax will change, this should return to a usable consistency when returned to a normal temperature albeit not quite the same as when the Spray Wax was new!

Application

  1. Spray wax a manageable area of around 1 square metre at a time.
  2. Spray the wax as evenly as possible and with a smooth action.
  3. Normally, beginners to wax spraying tend to spray a little too much wax on. This is because waxing with a spray gun tends to give the illusion that you are putting less on.
  4. It is IMPORTANT to push in the surface spray wax with a cloth as this is what keys the wax into the wood grain. Only ONE GENTLE wipe per surface is required. Too much clothing in will remove the wax and affect your result. NEVER use a dry cloth or sponge as this will remove any spray wax applied. ALWAYS use a cloth or sponge that has wax on it.
  5. Leave for half an hour or more and buff as normal.

Please note:

  • ALWAYS use a cloth or sponge that has wax on it, NEVER use them dry because this will remove any wax that has already been applied.
  • Leave the spray wax for half an hour or more and buff as normal.
  • For pushing in the surface wax, many polishers prefer to use a cloth on turned/shaped areas and a sponge on flat surfaces. A sponge will take less wax off.
  • It is common for polishers to spray too much wax on the wood to begin with which will only serve to increase the working time. Try spraying a little less wax than feels right to begin with.

The 2 main points to remember when using spray wax are:

  • To keep the wax completely liquid before use.
  • To make sure that the machine is flushed through with white spirit after EACH session.

Drying Time

A thick coat of spray wax will dry within 30 minutes, a thin coat of spray wax will dry in around 10 minutes.
